SDCC 2012: Legend of Korra Season 2 News

Always being about geek media in general and not just comics, some new info and pics were shown at San Deigo Comicon for the second season of the Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel-series, The Legend of Korra! Scans_Daily patron Espanolbot was good enough to gather some precious info regarding the future of the series, which was recently announced to have been greenlit for 50 additional episodes by Nickelodeon.

Among a slew of new concept art regarding the characters both established and new that are set to appear in Season 2, Mr. Bot was able to grab informational tidbits set to happen in the new seaon, such as the Southern Water Tribe being the main location of the new season, a look at Korra’s extended family, and further development of Tenzin’s older siblings Bumi and Kya. There is also to be a a look back on the origins of the Avatar and a large focus on the Spirit World.

The whole list of official reveals can be found at Espanolbot’s blog, as well as the character art and some setting design. Season 2 of Legend of Korra has no set air date as of yet, but it rumored to be early 2013.

SDCC 2012: Preview Night reveals MOTU Classics Granamyr, third Accessories Pack and more

News is already starting to trickle in from SDCC 2012. As booths start to be set up by various companies, people are snapping photos and posting them online. We’ve already gotten our very first look at Masters of the Universe Classics Granamyr, the largest figure to be released in 2012. We heard about the helmeted dragon first at last year’s convention, where the fan poll determined his coloration; Red as in the Filmation cartoon or Green as in the mini-comics. Clearly the Red vote has won out. He looks very well articulated, but it is not clear if the figure is rotocasted or not. He is going to be available in December and will be priced at approximately US$80.

Mattel’s DC Universe Club Infinite Earths subscription not garnering enough interest

One of the surprise announcements out of SDCC 2011 for Mattel was the discontinuation of DC Universe’s distribution to retail in the form of connect n’ collect/build-a-figure waves. No more build-a-figures would be offered at retail and instead the line would shift to more popular character selections shipped on a unique schedule. That left a hole for MattyCollector.com to fill by selling the figures of characters the line had not yet gotten to along with the more obscure character selections that tend not to do well with retail, but are popular among collectors.

In theory, this wasn’t a bad idea. Mattel set up a 9 month subscription that would feature nine monthly figures starting in April of 2012. There would also be three quarterly oversized figures and one club exclusive oversized figure as well. The latter, of which, would be decided by online fan poll based on a selection of revealed characters including, but not limited to, Black Lantern Swamp Thing and Shaggy Man.

The linch pin of this subscription, though, was that a specific number of subscriptions would need to be sold to make it viable. Mattel setup a thermometer to keep track of the relative number of subscriptions on MattyCollector.com to give people an informed view of how close they were to the goal.

Read more about the state of the subscription after the jump.

SDCC 2011: Mattel’s Mattypalooza panel

This was the big one for a lot of those following at home. Mattel had some big announcements to make including Ghostbusters, Voltron, DC Universe and most especially Masters of the Universe (MOTU). ActionFigurePics actually got video of the whole presentation (seen above). I will not attempt to summarize in neat bullet point form the contents of the panel after the jump. Get ready because there were some big announcements!
