Famicom Dojo Podcast: It’s About Time

Famicom Dojo Podcast 72: It's About Time

Even in the 8-bit days, the theme of time travel in video games was all around us. For some, it was a story excuse to visit historical landmarks and offer. Other explored idea of what it meant to manipulate tiem Usually, they were some poorly-designed movie tie-in. But each one offered an unmentioned promise that someday, somewhen, the ultimate time travel game would arise. Now, if only someone would invent actual time travel and send that game back to us in time for this episode! Vinnk and Sean discuss their favorite (and sometimes not-so-favorite) time travel games, what they did right, what they could have done better, and spend probably too much time gushing about Presto Studio’s The Journeyman Project and bolstering the merits of the 1996 Doctor Who movie on Fox starring Paul McGann. But, mostly, it’s about games. And we somehow forgot to mention Shadow of Destiny… (Don’t worry; we’ll try to cover that in the show notes.)

$20 Game of the Week: A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2

A-Valley-Without-Wind

A Valley Without Wind is an independently developed action game. If you buy it, you get it’s sequel for free, which is a good thing since the first game was a bit too experimental for its own good. It’s platforming action is a mix of RPG and exploration game mechanics, and the worlds you travel are randomly generated, so the game experience is different each time you play. The second game has more of a plot, along with turn-based strategy and deeper RPG customization features. While the first one was repetitive and the second one is a bit unforgiving, this two pack of games is a good value with an interesting premise and a classic old-school feel.

NTR-1I had to start thinking about how the new show would be sent to iTunes and the description I submitted was “A freight train of $#!+ without brakes” and needless to say I don’t have an iTunes feed yet.

This week we seek a friend for the end of the world, answer listener requests, and head to the minus would. Special Guest: Ernie!

Famicom Dojo Podcast: PlayStation Death

Famicom Dojo Podcast: PlayStation Death

One of the many interesting things about the PS4 is the name itself, since one of the Japanese words for “Four” is also the word for “death”. Prophetic, given the state of Sony and the PS3, or just a harmless pun? They’ll need a lot of killer apps to overcome that name, amiright? (Thanks to @Cheesemeister3k for that joke.) Sean and Vinnk discuss the PS4 reveal, the DualShock 4 controller redesign, and whether or not either of them will be getting one. Sony, y u no show console? Ah, no matter. What matters is the games, right? We try to find something to hold on to since we only have a list of titles and no price… or box… or…

Lost Classics: Robocop vs Terminator (SNES)

robocopvsterminator

Along with Superman/Batman, Freddy vs Jason, and Alien vs Predator, Robocop vs Terminator was one of several movie mega-crossovers that were brainstormed during the 90s. Of those four, only AvP and FvJ ended up seeing movie releases while Robocop vs Terminator ended up being a comic book limited series. There were two games loosely based upon the comic, one for Sega, another for Super Nintendo. While the Sega version was known for its blood, the SNES version was known for it’s music and moody atmosphere.

The Powet Top 5 – Michael Bay movies

Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf in Transformers

Michael Bay is not a liked man amongst people who like movies. I like movies and I don’t hate Michael Bay! Actually I like his movies quite a bit. Call them what you will, popcorn flicks, mindless entertainment, whatever, I don’t really respect those terms, I just like movies that are fun to watch so here are five pretty damned fun movies that are directed by Michael Bay.
