Lost Classics: Time Crisis: Project Titan (PS1)

Time Crisis was, and is still a trendsetter in the Arcades. Along with it’s polygonal graphics (which were pretty cutting edge at the time and still hold up well even to this day), the game also added a key innovation to the light-gun genre: the Duck Pedal. When you pressed the pedal, you popped out from under cover ready to take on enemies. When the pedal was depressed, you hid behind a nearby object where you could reload. However, each section was on a strict time limit, so you couldn’t hide underneath forever. When you played the game with another person in the game’s sequel, they played on another screen that was hooked up to the arcade cabinet, and they saw the action from a slightly different viewpoint. This was in contrast to two people looking at the same screen and being forced to take every bullet shot at them like other light gun games have done for years. Time Crisis Project Titan was a PlayStation-exclusive entry in the series. Playing as Richard Miller of the V.S.S.E, you fight to clear your name for the attempted assassination of Cuba’s President. The game contains the series’ signature duck and hide action, and you can even hide in different places by shooting the yellow arrows while the player is hiding. Oh yeah, and if you didn’t get it with the original PlayStation port of Time Crisis, TCPJ comes with a guncon for PS1. Of course it’s painted in a day-glow orange color so police won’t recognize it as a real weapon. Although TCPJ’s graphics were a bit dated at the time compared to the rest of the series, the game is still a fun light gun shooter with a gimmick that’s still clever even today.

$20 Game of the Week: EA MMA (PS3, Xbox 360)

Disclaimer: While I enjoy watching Mixed Martial Arts, I don’t keep up with it (or for that matter other sports) as frequently as I should. Thus, my knowledge of the sport extends little beyond this game.

MMA is the new Professional Wrestling. Of course unlike Pro-wrestling, MMA is very real and very brutal, and it has been increasing in popularity. So much in fact, that THQ teamed up with the UFC to bring UFC Unleashed to consoles, so it seems only natural that EA Sports wants to throw its hat into the ring (maybe that should be cage). While EA MMA isn’t perfect, it puts together a good package and manages to give THQ a run for its money.

BET’S The Game Coming to Consoles this Fall!

Created by Mara Brock Akil as a spin-off to her previous TV hit Girlfriends, The Game is a show which examines the lives of three members of a fictional football team and their relationships with the women in their lives. It was originally shown on CW, but it was canceled after 3 seasons. It was then picked up by BET, where a strong fan following gave it a new lease on life in the form of a new season, which aired this past January. Now it seems like it’s going to be game time again, as Strata, the makers of the arcade classics Time Killers and Blood Storm, have once again teamed with Incredible Technologies, makers of the arcade version of Street Fighter The Movie (which fans have regarded as the definitive Street Fighter game due to its digital representation of Van Damme), to bring The Game to Xbox 360, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Sony PSP, PC, IPhone OS, Windows Phone 7, and Android in the form of a one-on-one fighter. Just as they have revolutionized arcades back in the 90s, Strata/I.T will no doubt bring The Game home in the only way to do so: with bloody combat, grisly dismemberment attacks, secret characters who are palette swaps of other characters, and a stripper pole in your bedroom.

Spider-man: Edge of Time announced

A new Spider-man game has been announced from Activision and developer Beenox called Edge of Time. This will feature both Spider-man and Spider-man 2099. The game centers around the death of Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-man and how Spider-man 2099, Miguel O’Hara’s very own dark and catastrophic future is a direct result of Parker’s death. Gameplay will center on Miguel traveling back in time to cause change and moving forward in time to determine the effect. Its a neat concept that has led to many great stories in fiction, but could easily get very convoluted. Fortunately, the game is in good hands with Peter David writing the story. David is not only a comic book writing veteran, but he was also the long time scribe on the Spider-man 2099 series.

Attendees at WonderCon, this weekend, will apparently get the first look at the new game.

Consider me excited for more Spider-man 2099!

Powet @ PAX – SkullGirls Footage

For the first day of gathering intel on the floor of the PAX East Expo Hall, I managed to sneak some footage of one of the more interesting games being featured – SkullGirls

SkullGirls caught our eye due to it’s interesting style of gameplay and art. Looking like a cross between Marvel vs. Capcom and Guilty Gear, SkullGirls features some very crisp 2D art done by none other than Alex Ahad of Scott Pilgrim game fame. Developed by Autumn Games, it features young women duking it out with symbiotic skulls on their heads. It looks cooler than it sounds, so judge for yourself.
