$20 Game of the Week: M.U.D. TV (PC)

A few of you Poweteers might remember a little known PC game called MAD TV. In it, you played as a TV exec who competed against other execs for TV ratings, TV/Movie licensing deals, lucrative advertising contracts, and the affections of the lovely nature show producer on the top floor. Obviously it wasn’t based on the sketch comedy show of the same name (although they were both inspired by the same satire magazine). Although it received little fanfare, it was unique and fun. Years later, Realmforge and Kalypso Media released M.U.D TV (which stands for Mad, Ugly, Dirty Television), a game that is more than inspired by the classic title, although the developers claimed they never played it. Anyway, the game is just as fun as the game it apparently isn’t based on, even if the game gets a bit too difficult at times.

Coming Soon: Masters Of The Universe Movie Commentary

20 years before Michael Bay tried his hand at Transformers, another toy line crossed the line into live action. Masters Of The Universe is an honestly well done movie starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. Really, for a movie made with 1987 technology, it packs some pretty good action and visual effects. Its short comings are not unlike most 80s action movies: silly plot, some hammy acting, and a lot of posturing.

We’ve recorded a commentary track for this movie intended to be played in sync with the DVD. The DVD is available for less than $5 on Amazon right now. We’re going to release the show on August 31, 2011, and it will be available in our archives here. This is the first time we’re doing this, but it won’t be the last! We’re giving you a couple weeks of advance notice so you’ve got time to order the DVD or dig your copy out of storage or whatever you need to do. In the mean time, dig the teaser video posted above.

Powetracks

Powetracks are special editions of the Powetcast where we provide commentary tracks. These will usually be movies, but can also be episodes of TV shows or other media too. have your video ready, we’ll tell you when to hit play and listen as we provide insightful, irreverent, and sometimes silly soundtracks to what you see on screen.

For best results, listen to Powetracks on your MP3 player of choice with headphones while the movie plays on your TV or computer.

Species of Thundercats’ Third Earth image surfaces on tumblr

I came across a link on Twitter that was retweeted by one of the writers on the new Thundercats show currently airing on Cartoon Network. The link pointed a tumblr page with an image of different species from Third Earth, the planet, on which, the series takes place.
The text of the tweet I followed was:

This probably shouldn’t have been released, but it’s on this guy’s Tumblr, soooooo – species of Third Earth: skullgrin140.tumblr.com/post/830086461…

Famicom Dojo Podcast: Welcome to Die

When did video games start using “lives”? More importantly, when and why did they stop? With this changing, what does it mean to die in a game? Vinnk and SeanOrange examine the games that pioneered this mechanism, and take a look at when and why it started changing. Was it with games like Myst, or did adventure-style games always buck this trend? Has the fall of arcade gaming lead games to be easier, and therefore no longer need “lives”?

He Put Da Team on His Back!

Some time ago, some guy posted a Youtube video of Greg Jennings catching a 99 yard touchdown pass with a broken leg during a game of Madden. Some time later, EA decided to make an achievement out of it for Madden 2012. Catching a 99 year TD pass with Mr. Jennings nets you 50 gamerpoints. Thankfully you won’t have to do so with a broken leg. Sadly there’s no “F&*$ YOU GUMBY” achievement for players who sign out of Xbox Live mid-game.
