$20 er…….Free Game of the Week: Street Fighter X Mega Man (PC)

25 years ago, Mega Man made his debut on the NES. Over the years he became one of gaming’s most iconic characters, and the games he starred in have became synonymous with classic platforming action. This year is the blue bomber’s 25th anniversary. although Capcom has been a bit lax with the series as of late. Thankfully a fan created this title merging Mega Man with another iconic Capcom franchise: Street Fighter. Instead of giving it the cease and desist treatment, Capcom swooped the game up and decided to release it free on the http://capcom-unity.com website. SfXMM is a classic Mega Man style title, but instead of WIly’s 8 robot masters, you fighter 8 Street Fighters. The game is typical Mega Man: you’ll select what order by which to complete the stages, make your way through various hazards, and fight the level’s boss at the end. The music is composed of Street Fighter anthems, remixed 8-bit style. While the stages are a bit shorter than other Mega Man games, and there is no save feature, this is an excellent fan-project and a great celebration of two of Capcom’s biggest franchises. Plus, we’re getting it for free, so I’ll withhold any complaints.

Lost Classics: Kung Fu Heroes (NES)

Kung Fu Heroes is an NES port of an arcade game called Chinese Hero. Either playing alone or with a friend, players take control of Jacky and Lee as they try to rescue the princess. Each level takes place on a singular screen as you beat up waves of enemies and find hidden bonuses. It isn’t a very complex game, but it is fun and colorful, even if the characters are depicted somewhat stereotypical. It’s the first installment of Culture Brain’s “Super Chinese” video game franchise, or as we know it over here, Ninja Boy. Unlike later installments of the game, it contains no RPG elements. Even so, I can think of worse 8-bit titles to spend an afternoon with.

Pacific Rim movie trailer

Its movie trailer madness this week! The Pacific Rim trailer dropped at some point yesterday. I had never even heard of this movie before, but its directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth). It is some kind of cross between Godzilla, Gundam and Evangelion. I think I love it. This blows the GI Joe Retaliation and Man of Steel trailers out of the water.

Famicom Dojo Podcast: Wii U Be Mine

For as long as the Wii has been around, fans and critics alike maligned it for not supporting the HD or hardcore gaming crowd. There’s no way it can be a success! Now that the Wii U is out, supporting even HDMI out of the box (a first for consoles), and now it has a hard time supporting older televisions and standard definition. Nintendo is turning its back on classic gaming!

Vinnk and Sean explore why the launch of the Wii U wasn’t quite the same as that of its predecessor (also the only console launch of any kind since the Wii), wonder how it will stack up against the eventual and unannounced competition as it ages, and discuss the importance of getting a cake from the Japanese police department. Oh, and the wisdom of releasing Mass Effect 3 for full price when all three games are available on other consoles for the same amount.

GI Joe hype machine resets, third Retaliation trailer revealed

Just shy of two months from the one year anniversary of the first trailer for GI Joe Retaliation making its splash on a worldwide Super Bowl audience, we are seeing the film’s third trailer. Since the intial splash of the first trailer, the movie was postponed, partially refilmed and converted to 3D. I’m not sure this movie can overcome the initial hype gut punch it received from the postponement. There are only a couple scenes we haven’t seen before, one including Duke (Channing Tatum), seemingly confirming that his death was rewritten as part of the postponement. I’m not sure I can be as excited about this as I was almost a year ago, but I’m still looking forward to it.

GI Joe Retaliation comes to theaters on March 29th 2013.

[EDIT – I moved the trailer below because it was auto playing anytime the front page loaded. Click on the article to view the trailer.]

Man of Steel trailer #2

Here is the second Man of Steel teaser. We’ve been seeing teaser images and trailers for this since mid-2011. I was hoping to see more than this. Heavy on voiceover, light on action. I’m sure a lot of people are excited over this, but I’m not. Not yet, at least.
