Gamescom 2011: Uncharted 3 Trailer and Footage

I’ve only just started digging through the trailers and footage from Gamescom in Germany, but I’m already sick of hearing that mildly british voice say “pegi 16” or “pegi 18” at the top of each video.
Once you get past that irrelevant rating system (to our North American readership at least), this video will show you some Uncharted 3 action. Here we see a bit more of Drake boarding that plane that ends up in flames in the initial announcement of Uncharted 3.

After the cut, find off camera footage of the gameplay demo.

$20 Game of the Week: M.U.D. TV (PC)

A few of you Poweteers might remember a little known PC game called MAD TV. In it, you played as a TV exec who competed against other execs for TV ratings, TV/Movie licensing deals, lucrative advertising contracts, and the affections of the lovely nature show producer on the top floor. Obviously it wasn’t based on the sketch comedy show of the same name (although they were both inspired by the same satire magazine). Although it received little fanfare, it was unique and fun. Years later, Realmforge and Kalypso Media released M.U.D TV (which stands for Mad, Ugly, Dirty Television), a game that is more than inspired by the classic title, although the developers claimed they never played it. Anyway, the game is just as fun as the game it apparently isn’t based on, even if the game gets a bit too difficult at times.

He Put Da Team on His Back!

Some time ago, some guy posted a Youtube video of Greg Jennings catching a 99 yard touchdown pass with a broken leg during a game of Madden. Some time later, EA decided to make an achievement out of it for Madden 2012. Catching a 99 year TD pass with Mr. Jennings nets you 50 gamerpoints. Thankfully you won’t have to do so with a broken leg. Sadly there’s no “F&*$ YOU GUMBY” achievement for players who sign out of Xbox Live mid-game.

Bungie Studios Turns 20 With Hour Long Documentary

The developers of Marathon, Myth, and Halo game series have turned 20!
Bungie Studios has had the bittersweet duty of handing over the Halo franchise officially this week to Microsoft’s internal Halo team, 343 Industries. Now is a great time to get acquainted with the team as they embark on their next big action game (which is still a total secret, but definitely coming to PS3 and XBox 360).
They’ve put together a 55 minute documentary on their history, worth a watch if you’re a fan of any of their games or you just want to see how a company can go from a few guys in an apartment to one of the biggest and most powerful in the industry.

Meowth Captured in a Pokéball?

Big spoilers for an upcoming episode of the Pokémon anime. It looks like Iris is going to be capturing Meowth in a Pokéball. This of course raises interesting moral questions about whether or not it’s right to capture a clearly intelligent being able to carry on intelligent conversations, but then the whole practice of acquiring and battling Pokémon is sketchy at best.

Gotham City Impostors game trailer

Looks like we’ll be getting a new game based on the Batman franchise, albeit without Batman. Gotham City Impostors will be a downloadable game for Playstation Network and XBox Live Arcade.

Starcraft spoofed in Korean Comedy show

Apparently some Korean television show thought it would be funny to spoof Starcraft in some sort of squabble between two of the actors/comedians. And it was.

Nintendo to drop price of 3DS to $170

Purchase Nintendo’s latest handheld for $80 less on August 12. Existing 3DS owners will get exclusive Virtual Console games not sold in stores.

With the announcement of the PSVita at E3 2011, sluggish sales both in and out of Japan, and the possibility of having their connectivity gimmick copied before the Wii U hardware is even released, we predicted Nintendo would need to adjust the price of the 3DS in a big way. It looks like they got the message!

I’m not one to gloat, but– yes I am. We totally called this in our Famicom Dojo Podcast during the week of E3 — not just the need for a price drop, but the exact price point!

For those upset at the severe price drop, Nintendo will automatically enroll all 3DS owners in an “Ambassador” program — if they use the online store between now and August 11. The perks? 10 free NES titles on Virtual Console which will later be available to the public, and 10 free Game Boy Advance games via Virtual Console that Nintendo does NOT plan on ever making available for public sale.

(This smacks of the “no plans to release” the three games that are the focus of Operation Rainfall.)

So what do you think? Will a price drop of 1/3 be enough for you to buy this machine? $170 is within striking distance of an impulse buy for a 30-something with a college degree, but what about the kids? That’s still more than it costs to buy a Wii, but it looks like people aren’t paying for that that either. Are the 10 exclusive GBA games enough to get you to pay the full $250 before the price drop?
