Copycatting and Commission Catastrophies Part 1

The past week as been rife with ignorant tomfoolery for the geek communities I happen to be apart of, that happen to spill into the category of “nerdrage inducing”.

First off, it appears that Apple – a multi-billion dollar company that almost monopolizes the electronic industry – can’t be bothered to screen the Applications submitted to them to be put on their App Store. IronHide Games’ had their flash game Clash of the Olympians completely ripped off by Vietnam-based PTT Solution’s iPhone game Achilles’ Defense. The only difference is Ironhide’s game offers three playable characters, and PTT’s app has just one. However, the music, art and gameplay remain the same. (though the “Credits” part is conveniently replaced with “Instructions”) Seems Ironhide is not alone, however. Semi-Secret Software’s Canabalt, Nitrome’s Icebreaker & Skywire and Halfbot’s The Blocks Cometh all had the exact same thing done – the source code ripped, renamed, and slapped together for submission to Apple’s App Store for sale. With such a sudden trend in blatant copyright infringement, it raises questions about how Apple screens its Apps, but even more so if it even bothers with the wronged developers at all as currently, none have been given any follow up from Apple regarding the issue.

So what do you think? Is this something Apple should be bothered with? Should there be stricter regulations regarding Apps?

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record Trailer

A lot of stuff is coming out of Captivate 2011 now that the embargo has been lifted on their media spills. One of the tidbits that got out was a trailer for the game “Dead Rising 2: Off the Record” which looks to be an alternate scenario of the Fortune City outbreak, though instead of DR2 protagonist Chuck Greene, we have it told through the actions of DR1’s star reporter, Frank West.

Frank has already made an appearance as a secondary character along with Chuck in the DR2 DLC “Case West”. Looks like that wasn’t enough for some of Frank’s fans at the Capcom offices, because Dead Rising 2: Off The Record looks like it will be a full game separate from the original Dead Rising 2 game. (at least, that’s what the pre-order pricing on Amazon would lead you to believe) It’s currently listed to come out in October.

Mortal Kombat Series Premier on April 12th!

Remember that Mortal Kombat Rebirth trailer from last year, featuring Jeri Ryan and Michael Jai White as Sonya and Jax, that made waves in the gaming community? The one that was simply a film reel and not a real teaser for a possible movie? Well, if you’ve been living under a rock in the gaming world, since then the creator of the reel (Kevin Tancharoen) gleaned enough credit with Warner Bros. for them to greenlight a web series based on his re-imagining of the Mortal Kombat series. Since the news broke in January, many new actor have signed onto roles as other characters from the series and bits and pieces of what the series will feature have been hinted at.

On April 12th, Machinima will host a live feed of director Kevin Tanchaoen and several others, including actors of the series, playing the new Mortal Kombat game, and will feature at the end the premier of the first episode of the new web series. The feed will go live from 12pm to 4pm PST with the first episode right at 4pm PST.

Mortal Kombat is an anthology of stories inspired by the early adventures of characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya, Jax, Cyrax, Sektor and many others. The series features noted talents including Jeri Ryan, Michael Jai White, Ian Anthony Dale and more. Resident Evil Creator to Get own Action Figure

Seems Shinji Mikami, creator of Capcom’s titular survival horror video game series Resident Evil is getting his own action figure!

At least, that’s what the April Fool’s joke would lead you to believe.

Capcom Unity and AndriaSang.com reports that several hoax images have been created by Tango Gameworks (who Mikami now works for after having left Capcom a few years back) that feature Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami as a full-blown action figure that comes with accessories such as a shavable beard, a button that launches him into outer space depending on how much praise you give him, and shouts such quotes as “This Armani suit cost an arm ‘n a leg” and “If Shumacher had his own meal, you think he’d call it stewmacher?

Mikami worked on all the Resident Evil games right up until Resident Evil 4, as well has having a hand in producing Devil May Cry (what originally started out as being Resident Evil 4), Dino Crisis, Killer 7 and God Hand.

Mortal Kombat Full Roster Leaked

The new Mortal Kombat is less than a month away from its release on April 19th in the US, and despite not having officially released trailers or imagery for all the characters that will be playable in the game, some new images have been leaked that show the entire roster of the game along with the each character’s VS portrait.
The image shows several characters that had been more or less “revealed” as going to be in the game, yet hadn’t had any renders released. Likewise, the new “Cyborg Sub-Zero” portrait is included, signifying him as a possible unlockable character.

A character selection screen has also been leaked in tangent with the VS portraits. Both images can be found on the Mortal Kombat Online forums, along with a collection of other leaks and information and game speculation, including info on Kenshi revealed not long ago as a DLC character, along with the titular “Lady in Red” (the character fans long ago nicknamed “Skarlett” from previous fan fame). We’ll keep you updated with any more info as it comes out, including the supposed Xbox exclusive character creator Ed Boon has been hinting towards in his twitter that will be opposite the PS3 exclusive Kratos.
