UPDATE: Jeri Ryan has chimed in via her twitter account:

Okay, so… Mortal Kombat. It’s not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film. I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB’s reaction to it was. And I’m not sure how you can contact WB to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful…!

So that’s it folks, nothing to see here. At least not yet. The near unanimous fan reaction will hopefully get Warners to at least move in this direction if not actually use this particular pitch. Original post follows…

MKA new Youtube Account named just “Mortal Kombat Rebirth” today uploaded a short film featuring Michael Jai White (Spawn, Gambol from Dark Knight) as Jax and Jeri Ryan (Star Trek Voyager’s 7 of 9) as Sonya Blade. We’ve certainly seen fan films with star power before, but nothing quite this level. Also seen are new interpretations of Johnny Cage, Reptile, Baraka, Shang Tsung, and Scorpion.

This video appears exactly one week before E3, the video game industry’s biggest show, where countless new games will be announced and hyped for the first time. While this is a Hollywood level teaser film, we also have to remember that Warner Bros purchased Mortal Kombat after Midway’s bankruptcy, and has been itching to turn the series back into a major game and movie franchise. MK creator Ed Boon has said in interviews for years that they intended to get back to the gritty, M-Rated roots, though they were sidelined by the crossover DC Universe game.

Of course, we can’t forget that Mortal Kombat got its start filming actors to be digitized into the arcade games. Do we dare hope they’ve found a next generation cast for the next generation MK?

We’re swapping theories on our forum. Whats yours?
