$20 Game of the Week; Spore (PC, MAC)

Spore was perhaps Will Wright and Maxis’ most ambitious game to date. Although it wasn’t perfect, it’s level of customization is rivaled only by Maxis’ other big franchise, The Sims. While it may have caught some heat with the whole creationism vs evolution debates, a key part of its gameplay is how things evolve over time. Like Enix’s EVO from nearly 2 decades prior, Spore’s big hook is that it makes a controversial subject such as evolution a fun part of the gameplay.

He Put Da Team on His Back!

Some time ago, some guy posted a Youtube video of Greg Jennings catching a 99 yard touchdown pass with a broken leg during a game of Madden. Some time later, EA decided to make an achievement out of it for Madden 2012. Catching a 99 year TD pass with Mr. Jennings nets you 50 gamerpoints. Thankfully you won’t have to do so with a broken leg. Sadly there’s no “F&*$ YOU GUMBY” achievement for players who sign out of Xbox Live mid-game.

$20 Game of the Week: EA MMA (PS3, Xbox 360)

Disclaimer: While I enjoy watching Mixed Martial Arts, I don’t keep up with it (or for that matter other sports) as frequently as I should. Thus, my knowledge of the sport extends little beyond this game.

MMA is the new Professional Wrestling. Of course unlike Pro-wrestling, MMA is very real and very brutal, and it has been increasing in popularity. So much in fact, that THQ teamed up with the UFC to bring UFC Unleashed to consoles, so it seems only natural that EA Sports wants to throw its hat into the ring (maybe that should be cage). While EA MMA isn’t perfect, it puts together a good package and manages to give THQ a run for its money.

Lost Classics: Populous (PC, Amiga, Genesis, SNES, Master System, Amiga ST, DOS, Nintendo DS)

Long before Fable, Peter Molyneux’s Bullfrog Productions produced what was considered one of the first “God” Simulators. And a God simulator it certainly was. You played as a deity out to guide your people towards prosperity….by bringing about the apocalypse and beating the crap out of the other deity. You flattened and raised land so that your worshipers can build houses to produce more worshipers. You also have access to several spells that can unleash disasters upon your opponents, such as earthquakes and floods. While it’s primitive by today’s standards, Populous is still a fun game that contains just enough strategy to keep players reeled in. A Nintendo DS update was released a few years ago by XSeed featuring new gods, new maps, and stylus play. It’s available for cheap, so if you haven’t experienced this classic, then there is no better time to do so.
