Powet Alphabet: F is for Flipsides

In 2002, it all started out so innocently. Takara was reissuing some of the original line of Transformers. As an E-Hobby exclusive, special variants were made of brand new characters that never appeared in the original show. The result was Road Rage and Crosscut. After that, what followed could only be described as a wave of repainted G1 molds as new characters with new stories inserted into the Generation 1 canon. This is what we may call a ‘retcon’ since the books were more or less closed on new stories from the original canon up to that point. Repaints of Hound, Sideswipe, Starscream, Grapple and more would follow with new color schemes, names and bios. If a mold had been part of the Diaclone or Microchange line, that original paint scheme would be used as an option as well.

Sucker Punch Fantasy Artwork Posters

Last week I showed you the trailer for SUCKER PUNCH, a new film from Zack Snyder about hot chicks in a mental institution, which may replace the young male fantasy of hot chicks in prison upon its release.

While this is aimed squarely at the type of guy who reads comic books, its not based on any comic or other source material. With that in mind another set of character posters were created of the main cast by artist Alex Pardee.

To see the larger version, right click on the image, select “Save As” and download to your folder marked “hentai.”

SUCKER PUNCH will release March 2011.

Maximum Letdown: Master Chu and the Drunkard Hu (NES)

masterchuA word to the wise: just because something comes from the Far East, makes no sense, and flops commercially, does not make it a cult classic, a good game, or even an above average game for that matter. (Oh, and before you hit us up with any hate mail, I should let you know that I count Madworld amongst my top 10 games from last year, enjoyed No More Heroes, got a good laugh out of Katamari Damancy, and even loved Killer 7 enough to try to make sense out of its plot, and I even featured 3 of those 4 games as previous $20 GOTWs). Crap is crap, regardless of which side of the Pacific Ocean it comes from. Such is the case of this clunker, produced by Taiwanese company Joy Van and released in the United States by our friends at Color Dreams.

Better pictures of Masterpiece Rodimus Prime surface

Yesterday, we posted some of the first images of the Masterpiece Rodimus Prime unpainted prototype. There were only a three pictures and they left more questions than answers. Today, a TFW2005 poster, posted new images of the unpainted prototype that give a better idea of what this toy is going to be like. I have mirrored them below.

The trailer pictures seem to confirm my underwhelming initial impressions. The robot looks fantastic, with what appears to be a rotating face gimmick to show Hot Rod’s face, similar to the gimmick on the Masterpiece Starscream mold. Overall, the figure looks entirely too short though. We don’t know for certain yet, but he looks much shorter than the Masterpiece Optimus Prime mold and that is a disservice to Rodimus as another Prime. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Pictures are after the jump!

Alex Paints an Anarchy Symbol in Wizards of Waverly Place

Anarchy Symbol in Wizards of Waverly Place

Another fun little Easter Egg from the Disney TV show “Wizards of Waverly Place”. In episode 23 of season 2, “Paint by Committee”, Alex Russo, played by Selena Gomez, paints a giant letter A on a wall in an abandoned train tunnel. When asked about it’s meaning she says “It’s my initial in a circle representing … my initial in a circle.” but the symbol bears a striking resemblance to an anarchy symbol.

Anarchy SymbolWhat could be the symbolism behind this logo? Alex Russo is a pretty free spirited girl, often opposing authority and rules, so the anarchy symbol certainly applies on a fairly superficial level, but I wouldn’t go so far as to suggest the art department be insinuating we all be better off in a world without Government.

Later in the episode as Alex paints her mural “New York Above and Below” we can once again see the iconic “initial in a circle” shown in the below portion referred to as the “gritty grimy New York, filled with barf”.

Wizards of Waverly Place is known for hiding such symbols. Alex Russo can be seen wearing peace symbols as part of various outfits throughout the show. These occur so frequently that an effort is made to include at least one peace symbol in Selena Gomez’s outfits in every episode of season 2. As opposed to the anarchy symbolism, the crew have made clear that they have strong feelings about putting forth a positive message of peace. Earlier this month Powet reported on Selena wearing an I love hoe bags t-shirt. Though in that case it may have been a mere coincidence, this painting’s resemblance to an anarchy symbol seems to be more than chance.

SDCC 2010: Live Action Blue Beetle Footage

BlueBeetle_IIA while back DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns teased onTwitter that a test reel of a proposed live action Blue Beetle series existed and that he might show it at San Diego ComiCon. Here a few days after the con, the footage is online. What do you think?

Johns did promise we’ll see Blue Beetle on TV soon. He’s writing another episode of Smallville, now in its final season, that will feature the Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle. The same episode will feature long time BB cohort Booster Gold. It is certainly possible with Smallville finally ending that CW may try to spin some of the great DC characters they’ve had on the series into their own shows.

As for what a Ted Kord Blue Beetle and Booster Gold show would be like, might I suggest…

SDCC 2010: Icon Heroes – Thundercats

Icon Heroes was present at SDCC to show off their new Thundercats line of mini-statues.
ActionFigurePics.com has a small gallery of what was on display from Preview Night. They had the Lion-O staction, both the SDCC Exclusive and regular version on display along with the new Thunderclaw vehicle staction. It comes with another Lion-O mini-statue as a driver and is in scale to the rest of the line, meaning it is quite large. I have included a size comaprison photo from the company’s site for reference with the Thunderclaw next to the regular release Lion-O 6 inch mini-statue. Also on display was a fully painted Jackalman staction and an unpainted prototype of Lynx-O. I like what I’m seeing from this line. Its unfortunate they were unable to obtain the actual toy license for this property instead of settling on a mini-statue license.
