Botcon 2013 Exclusive Obsidian revealed

obsidianALTweb

Due to a scheduling error, we are running a little behind in our week of Botcon reveals, so here is another! Obsidian!
Obsidian, like Strika, is another character from Beast Machines ported back to Machine Wars in his former Autobot glory. Obsidian uses the Hunt for the Decepticons Highbrow mold with a newly tooled head. He looks pretty great in robot mode, especially with those rotors on his arms like his Beast Machines design. The alternate mode is a bit more of a departure considering Obsidian was a helicopter in Beast Machines.

Powet Top 5: Alternate Realities

Let’s face it: our world is disappointing. We have to pay taxes out the tuckus. We have to work 40+ hour weeks to make ends meet. We have corrupt politicians screwing us over on a daily basis. We have the Westboro Baptists and other fanatics maintaining the status quo. Our world sucks, and it’s just made worse by the fact that we’re told by scientists that the possibility of alternate realities exist. Realities where the slightest divergence in fate can turn you from a pencil-pushing cubicle jockey to the president of Club Awesome.

These are those divergences from our every-day knowns that make us wonder “Why the heck couldn’t I have been born into THAT world?” Where you could be a superhero/villain or leader of a alien rebel militia or a tech-genius millionaire with hot chicks/dudes/whatever just hanging off of you at every turn. Those are the alternate universes that we wish some slight change in the timestream had set us on the path to becoming our every-day norm, for good or for ill.

Mostly for the good, thought. If not the awesome.

Lost Classics: Final Fantasy 6 (SNES, Game Boy Advance, Playstation, Playstation Network, Virtual Console)

ff6

Final Fantasy was the last of the ‘old school’ Final Fantasy games, and it would be the last numbered entry on a Nintendo system (barring the remakes). When it was released over here, it was re-titled Final Fantasy 3 as it was the third FF game to be released in North America. It’s graphics, characters, and story stand out as one of the greatest RPG epics even to this day.

Sims 3 Finally Enrolls in the University (Plus More)!

Even though EA just released the much sought after Seasons less than two months ago, they got 5 new add-ons (3 expansion packs and 2 stuff packs) coming throughout the next twelve months. This month will see the release of 70, 80s, and 90s Stuff, a stuff pack that will add outfits, hairstyles, and objects inspired by….you guessed it, the 70s, 80s, and 90s. This March, EA will bring us University Life, another much-requested expansion pack. From young adult to elder, Sims can enroll in a higher learning institute, pick one of several majors, and earn a career boost after graduation. They can also join one of three different groups; Nerds, Jocks, and Rebels (no foreign exchange students, goths, or ethnic identity clubs?). While not much more info about the game has been released, as you can see in the trailer above, Sims can engage in beer pong, paint graffiti, participate in student protests, pose naked for paintings, and a bunch of other fun stuff. The game will feature a new city with a comic book shop and a coffeehouse. This game is going to recreate my college experience to a T.

The Powet Top 5 – Best movies of 2012

Welcome to the Powet Top 5, where we explore the top (and bottom) 5 items we think are relevant to any of a variety of topics that span the imagination. Sit back, read, and respond

21 Jump Street - Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill

2012 is now behind us. The year came with it’s share of decent movies. I made a pact with some friends to catch most of the summer movies and aside from that crappy Spider-Man flick I can honestly say I had a good time at all of them. So here’s a look at my top 5 personal favourites of the year. I’m sure to miss some of your favourites so feel free to let me know why I’m wrong in the comments!

I already discussed my favourites of 2012 on this week’s Powetcast. I took a little more time to look over the year’s movies before putting together my final list. I also made sure I saw the Hobbit before I wrote this article, though you will notice that I found it undeserving of being included.

MAGfest 11: Pre-Event Lineup

Another year has gone by and another MAGfest is upon us. Last year, Sean Orange and I made the trek to MAGfest X to take part in the 4-day music and gaming geekery that surrounded us, and this year we’ll be doing another round and taking in all the highlights (and even maybe some hilarious lowlights!) that the event has to offer.

This year features 3 special guests in terms of composers. Following up last year’s spectacular appearance by Final Fantasy’s Nobou Uematsu, MAGfest XI has the legendary combined talents of Kuniyo Yamashita (Castlevania, MegaMan X3), Chris Huelsbeck (Turrican Series, R-Type) and the great Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage, Actraiser) gracing the Gaylord National Harbor hotel. This will also be the first time Koshiro will be playing a DJ set in US shores, which provides event-goers with an extra special treat!

There are a huge amount of bands and performances this year as well; 38 concerts and visual performances to be exact! (the largest amount thus far!) Included in the lineup are mainstays such as Metroid Metal, The One-Ups and The Megas, but also included are a ton of new-comers to the MAGfest scene such as Lords of Thunder, Fighting in the Streets and The Tri-Force Quartet. There’s even band-personifications of two of the better institutions for video game music arranging: Overclocked Remix’s Overclocked University and Dwelling of Duels Live! Throw in tons of panelist and entertains like Arin “Egoraptor” Hanson, The Angry Video Game Nerd and yet another return by Jon St. John, and you’ve got the most ambitious MAGfest to date!

The event runs January 3-6 at the Gaylord National Harbor Hotel, Maryland with tell that there are tons of tickets still available at the door. Sean and I will bring coverage of the fun little things we run across at this gamer’s paradise and bring it to you for your viewing enjoyment.
