Famicom Dojo Podcast: Hale to the Spectre

Women in gaming have made tremendous strides, both onscreen and off, behind the scenes, or playing the games. Fans of the Female Shepard in the Mass Effect series — male and female alike — encouraged BioWare to finally put her in their advertisements and materials just so that other gamers would know she exists. It’s 2011; are women still being overlooked in gaming? Sean talks to guest panelists Sindra and Megan about what it’s like to be such a minority in gaming culture, and discuss their favorite heroines from the aforementioned Shepard, to “Lady Hawke” from Dragon Age 2, Samus in Metroid, Alex Roivas in Eternal Darkness, and more! And Sean tries to avoid saying “that’s what she said” for almost an entire hour.

GI JoeCon 2012 date and location announced

The location for the 2012 GI Joe Collectors’ Convention will be New Orleans, Louisiana. The con will take place starting June 21st through June 24th. Hotel information will be coming soon, but at least you can start planning where you won’t be during those days. The June/July convention time slot is usually saved for Botcon, the official Transformers Collectors’ Convention, both run by Fun Publications. The significance of this should not be lost. The GI Joe movie sequel, GI Joe: Retaliation, premieres one week after the date of this convention.

TGS 2011: Gloops Interview and Legend Cards preview

Our first proper interview (I suppose the Evangelion one doesn’t count), and it’s one of our favorites! Taken on Day 1 of the show, we checked out the Gloops booth in the mobile games section. There are a lot of undiscovered gems in that area, but we’re hoping this one is just going to become a “gem”.

The Gloops rollout should be happening in the US in 2012, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled and check out any of the products they bring over as they’re released.

$20 Game of the Week: Supreme Commander 2 (PC, Xbox 360)

Supreme Commander 2 is the sequel to Supreme Commander, which is the spiritual successor to Gas Powered Games’ creator Chris Taylor’s classic Total Annihilation. Square-Enix partnered with the developers in order to publish it, making it one of the company’s first forays into real-time-strategy. Like its predecessor, and its predecessor before it, Supreme Commander 2 focuses on RTS action with large amounts of units. And when I say large, I don’t mean swarming your opponent with 20 or 30 infantry. No sir, I mean hitting people up with hundreds of units, land, air, sea, and infantry in an coordinated assault on the enemy. You take control of one of three factions, the UED, Illuminate, or the Cybran. Each faction has its own unique units and characteristics, and the single player campaign will put you in control of all three of them. Various patches have address many of the game’s shortcomings, and new maps and units have been added via downloadable content. Although many critics argue that it’s system isn’t as complex as the original, its deep RTS gameplay will still keep you enthralled for sure.
