$20 Game of the Week: Hate Plus (PC)

hateplusHate Plus is the sequel to 2012’s Analog: A Hate Story. In that visual novel, players learned the terrible truth of the derelict space ship, the Mugunghwa, and what happened to its inhabitants. All that remained of the ship and its culture were it’s two A.Is, and it was up to players to piece together the events that led to the disaster that claimed the lives of its passengers. However, upon reading the log files, it was clear that the culture and society on the ship had regressed to feudal levels and traditions, where ruling families held all the power and women were treated as second class citizens. Hate Plus, beginning only a few moments after Analog ends, tells the story of the events leading up to ‘year zero’, the point when society regressed to the form seen in Analog. It’s an even more heartbreaking and gripping tale than Analog, and it will suck you right in provided you are prepared to do a lot of reading.

Deadpool movie gets a release date

After X-Men Origins: Wolverine came out, it was unclear if Deadpool would get his own movie. There was a script and intent, but the disappointing portrayal of the character in the movie put many off. Fox was very hesitant to greenlight the project after the disappointment of both X-Men 3 and the X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Lately, things have shifted in the other direction gaining momentum for the movie. The success of X-Men: Days of Future Past, a widely well received leaked teaser reel of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and most importantly from the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has forced Fox’s hand to expand the X-Men franchise into a wider universe of movies. We now know that Deadpool will be one of those movies.

Deadpool will make his solo debut on February 12th, 2016.

Deadpool joins a very busy cinematic release year including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, X-Men: Apocalypse, Captain America 3, Doctor Strange and Sony’s Sinister Six. It is an exciting time to be a comic book fan!

Famicom Dojo Podcast: 3DS The Third

Famicom Dojo Podcast 103: 3DS the Third

It’s a bit later than expected, but the 3DS has finally gotten the second stick (well, a nub really), and enough buttons to make it nearly feature complete with a Wii U GamePad. A herald of things to come for Nintendo, or sheer coincidence? Sean and Vinnk wonder if this is the next logical step for the 3DS, or merely a placeholder for what’s really coming next. Vinnks Zonks out with Future Retro, and Sean tries out a Nintendo classic finally coming to the US on 3DS Virtual Console. Vinnk adds another chapter to his Ace Attorney 5 saga in Pile of Shame, and Sean tries out Vindicators thanks to Reddit.

Famicom Dojo Podcast: Play It Again, Samus

Famcom Dojo Podcast 102: Play It Again, Samus

After the y cant metroid crawl meme sprang into being upon the release of Super Metroid on the Wii U Virtual Console, Sean recorded a bunch of footage performing tricks in the game, but it’s been over a year and we haven’t made it into a proper video yet. Sean put out the raw footage on another YouTube channel at the same time Phil was working through the GBA Metroid games. So we decided to talk to Phil about his experience playing through (quote-unquote) old 2D Metroid again! Sean and Phil talk about replaying the Game Boy Advance games, sequence breaking, and undocumented secrets in Super Metroid. Future Retro covers the unofficial Project M mod for Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii, and Pile of Shame laments how difficult it is to get back into Metroid Prime 2 after almost a decade.

$20 Game of the Week: Lone Survivor (PC)

This is the third of our special series of horror-related $20GOTW for the month of October.

Developed by Jasper Bryne, Lone Survivor is a 2D-pixelated survival horror game which places an emphasis on survival and sanity. You are a nameless character who wears a surgical mask. You are stuck in an apartment in a middle of an outbreak which has caused people to turn into mindless mutants. You have to explore the apartment and find other survivors. However, you’ll have to find food and sleep in order to stay alive and maintain your sanity. You will be beset by strange hallucinations, and at times, it will be difficult to tell what’s real and what isn’t. You find weapons and ammo, but a lot of times it’s a better idea to hide from enemies rather than take them on. You’ll constantly be playing against the clock, as not only do you have to find items needed to proceed, but you’ll also have to find food and sleep on a regular basis. You’ll gain one of several endings depending on how you proceed in the world. While Lone Survivor looks like it would fit on the Super Nintendo, it’s disturbing and unique enough to fit in with today’s survival horror.
