$20 Game of the Week: Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition (PC, Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita)

Mortalkombat2011logo

Like Street Fighter IV two years prior, Mortal Kombat 9 (simply called Mortal Kombat) serves as a revival of everything players loved about the series even as it attracts a new generation of players. Although Midway has long since been dead as a gaming company, the original developers, under the name Netherrealm Studios, haven’t lost a beat as the most recent entry, Komplete with all the DLC characters, walks a fine line between revamped sequel and reboot.

Famicom Dojo Podcast: Nintendo Adapts

Famicom Dojo Podcst 097: Nintendo Adapts

Nintendo appeases the hardcore Super Smash Bros. tournament crowd with a wired adapter for GameCube controls, playable at the Smash Bros Invitational. The newest Mario Kart was released last week, selling out Pro Controllers everywhere, crashing the Club Nintendo website, and increasing sales of the Wii U in the UK alone by 666%. In less than a week, Mario Kart 8 has sold 1.2 million copies worldwide. YouTube announced a monetization scheme for users uploading Nintendo videos. Is Nintendo finally listening to its fans, or did it just take this long to unlock the Wii U’s potential? Vinnk and Sean put down Mario Kart 8 long enough to discuss what Nintendo is doing right, and if there are bigger things on the horizon. The Wii U is having a renaissance, and it’s not even E3 yet.

Mortal Kombat X announced with trailer

A trailer was released today announcing Mortal Kombat X. This was not entirely a surprise as series creator, Ed Boon, had been counting down to something on his Twitter account. Amazon UK apparently posted a listing for it prematurely last night, but quickly removed it. It is not clear what systems will be targeted for release, but it is safe to say that XBox One and PS4 are probably on that list considering the incredibly detailed graphics shown. Xbox 360, PS3 and PC were included in the accidental Amazon UK posting, but that can’t be considered official yet. The game will be coming in 2015.

Canceled Part 5: A Maximum Letdown Special

gaminggraveyard

This past memorial day, we remembered the brave men and women in our military who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We as gamers also remember the many games that have been left on the cutting room floor, some due to budget issues, others due to executive meddling, and others due to censorship. This list of titles once again mentions 10 games that didn’t make it past previews and concept stages. Some titles we were better off without. However, other titles were potential classics that were killed off before their time. All games mentioned deserved their time in the spotlight, even if metacritic would have given them a rating of only 5.5.

Famicom Dojo Podcast: DisKinect

Famicom Dojo Podcast 096: DisKinect

We’ve long been wary of digital services on consoles at Famicom Dojo, because every time one shuts down there’s the inevitable pain that follows, and features that can never be recaptured. This is what is happening with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection going dark this week, which takes with it all online multiplayer (and related features) for not only Wii and DS titles, but anything that relied on GameSpy for online connectivity. Similarly, Microsoft has continued its Xbox One backpedaling and has decided that the Kinect 2.0 isn’t required hardware after all. Sean and Vinnk wonder if this change to the Xbox One will make them more likely to get it over the PS4, and decide how best to go out on Nintendo’s original online service. Also, we discuss the Amplitude Kickstarter by Harmonix (which, by now, should be fully funded). We review a brand new game in Future Retro, and Pile of Shame isn’t about video games at all!

Second Guardians of the Galaxy trailer takes us on a ride

The new Guardians of the Galaxy trailer is upon us and sure packs a punch. We see lots of new things in here. First, we revisit Korath, the Pursuer confronting Peter Quill as he tries to steal some orb object. Among the things that follow are Starlord’s ship, Ronan the Accuser (who apparently has more than just a cameo in this movie), a little more of Nova Prime (Glenn Close) and the Nova Corps, Rocket Raccoon speaking, Knowhere (the disembodied head of a Celestial converted into a space port), a glimpse of a fight between Nebula and Gamora, Groot (Vin Diesel) speaking his notable catchphrase and finally, lest we forget, Rocket Raccoon adjusting himself.

Count all of these among the things I thought I would never see in a movie theater.

Guardians of the Galaxy will be rocking your world starting August 1st, 2014!
