Red Faction Battlegrounds Announcement Trailer

Some of the more fun parts of Red Faction Guerrilla were driving a car into a building to knock it down. Or hopping in a mech and wrecking the crap out of enemy soldiers forming on your position.

THQ realizes this and has a dandy Xbox Live Arcade and PSN game called Red Faction Battlegrounds that will be out next year.

Red Faction Armageddon! Get Your Ass To Mars!

redfactionarmageddonThe follow up to 2009’s best open world game, Red Faction Armageddon takes the destruction underground. You’ll play Darius Mason, the grandson of Red Faction Guerilla’s Alec Mason.

Game is coming March 2011, so you’ve got 9 months to camp outside your favorite retailer before you can take the deadly Nano Forge / Sledgehammer combo to some underground alien settlements. Oh yeah, this is the fourth game in the series and the first to actually include Martians.

Red Faction coming to SyFy!

The sleeper hit of last year, the critically acclaimed reboot of Red Faction is being developed for the cable channel Syfy (formerly SciFi).

Red Faction deals with post colonization of Mars in 2120 when natural resources for Earth have been depleted and the citizens of Mars are forced into servitude and slavery to the Earth Defense Force. The minors and workers form their own revolutionary group, the Red Faction, and begin targeting the operations of their unwelcome captors in the name of a free Mars.

According to Broadcasting & Cable, SyFy intends to produce Red Faction as a movie event first, which if successful will be expanded into a regular series.

In addition, THQ’s sequel to Red Faction Guerrilla will be co-produced with SyFy Games, furthering the channel’s long term commitment to the series.

Red Faction Guerrilla as a game was a real blast, knocking down buildings with all manner of explosives or just using your sledgehammer. Unfortunately the story is a little weak, but the universe has a lot of potential especially if the producers want to get daring and relate the conditions on Mars to current day events. We’ll have to keep an eye on who lines up to write and star in the show to see.

$20 Game of the Week: Saint’s Row 2 (PS3, Xbox 360)

saintsrow2So maybe the original Saint’s Row wasn’t the most original game of 2006, but it was wickedly fun, and its open world action improved on Grand Theft Auto’s formula in many aspects. It’s shock ending guaranteed that fans would be clamoring for a sequel, and sure enough, THQ and Volition deliver. Other than a few tweaks here and there, the developer sticks to the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ school of thought. Saint’s Row definitely was not broken, and it’s time for gamers to take a return trip to Stillwater.

$20 Game of the Week: Saint’s Row (Xbox 360)

saints_row.jpgWhile this might not have been the most original open-world crime game, it was one of the best and most unique. When it was released, Grand Theft Auto 4 was more than a year away from release. Volition’s (The Punisher, Red Faction) game helped to make the wait much more bearable, and it even improved some of Grand Theft Auto’s game mechanics. With a sequel on deck for later this year, GTA IV less than a week away from release, and even Mercenaries 2 arriving this fall, now is a perfect time to visit Stillwater, if for no other reason than to get yourself ready for the open-world goodness arriving throughout the next several months.

Gary Busey’s Guide To Saints Row 2

OK, so GTA IV is merely days away. Saints Row proved itself to be a worthy contender to the open world genre when it debuted, and the sequel looks to amplify that. Of course, no personality is more amped than Gary Busey, so the following videos show off some of Saint’s Row 2’s improvements with comments from Gary.

More after the break…
