Powet Alphabet: J is for Jonas Venture

J is for Jonas Venture

Since the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

One of the things the Venture Brothers is known for is its diverse cast of characters. Just seeing the logo or mentioning it by name automatically brings images of Doc, Brock, Hank, Dean, The Monarch and his henchmen to mind. One of the characters who is often overlooked is Thaddeus “Rusty” Venture’s own father, Jonas.

Jonas is an obvious parody of Hanna Barbera’s Benton Quest (Johnny Quest’s father) and other “Adventurer” characters from the late 60’s and 70’s. Jonas’ voice (provided by voice actor Paul Boocock) and physical appearance are a definite nod to characters of that era. Unlike most Hanna Barbera action-dads, he is much colder towards his son and generally has a somewhat of a disregard for his feelings and general well being. If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll probably know all of this, but if not be warned, there are plenty of spoilers after the break.

Powet Alphabet: J is for Judgment Day

Kyle and Derek Reese Judgment Day April 21st 2011 Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Since the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

3 billion human lives ended on August 29th 1997. The survivors of the nuclear fire called the war Judgment Day. They lived only to face a new nightmare: the war against the machines.

Judgment Day is, simply put, the day the world really goes to hell in Terminator continuity.

A company named Cyberdyne Systems was tasked with building Skynet as part of a defense contract for SAC-NORAD, which is a fictional merging of the very real “Strategic Air Command” and “NORth American Aerospace Defense Command”. Skynet was a vast computer system which was tied in to all aspects of US defense. Skynet was brought online August 4th 1997. Things went well for about 25 days and then at 2:14am on that fateful day on August 29th 1997, it became self aware.

After the humans have a completely validated instinct to try to pull the plug, Skynet retaliated in a fierce way. Humanity’s fate was decided in a microsecond. Skynet, being the crafty AI that it is, attacks targets in Russia. Aren’t they our friends now? Well yeah, but Russia retaliates, destroying Skynet’s enemies in the US. Thus half the Earth’s population is destroyed.

Powet Alphabet: J is for JJ, Joss, and Judd

Since the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

thejs

What is this composite, amalgamated entity? If you’re a fan of anything Science Fiction, Science Fantasy, or generally geek, you’ve seen movies and/or TV shows by at least one of these three gentlemen — if not all three — even if you don’t know their names. Of the many things they have in common, the most obvious (and least important) is that all of their names start with “J”. I frequently can’t think of one without thinking of the other two. Together they are like some triune entity, the three faces of a Geek (not “Greek”) god.

Let’s explore their credentials together.
