Powet Alphabet: B is for Bat-Girl

Batgirl has been a staple of the Batman mythos for decades, much like Much like Robin, the boy/girl wonder — though for not quite as long. The one near-constant of this title is that the girl in question usually ends up as the current Robin’s girlfriend. That might not be so bad, except the role sentences the unsuspecting Batgirl a slew of terrible fates (in no particular order): being shot, paralyzed, raped, tortured to (apparent) death, and even wiped out of existence. Mostly.

Regardless, I’m sure fans everywhere remember when the very first Bat-Girl, Betty Kane, burst onto the scene with her red, green, and gold outfit.

…bwuh??

Read on to see more about Batwoman’s sidekick, and her not-quite-as-long-as-Robin line of unhyphenated successors.

Powet Alphabet: B is for Bleach

Bleach_cover_01I ain’t talking about no damn laundry soap. Bleach is a very popular anime and manga series created by Tite Kubo. It debuted in America is 2006 and is currently shown Saturday nights on Cartoon Network’s late night Adult Swim programming block. It can best be described as Ghostbusters and X-men meet Gi-Joe and Samurai Showdown. It enjoys a nice following, particularly amongst fansubbers and bittorrent pirates, almost becoming as iconic of an anime as Sailor Moon, Gundam, or Naruto. This article deals with the anime, although most of it is adopted from the manga. The series has been on hiatus since last November, and re-runs have been shown in its Saturday night time slot since then. New episodes are set to premiere August 28th.

Powet Alphabet: B is for Blackest Night

Since the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

One of the many ways one becomes a geek is by absorbing the minutiae and esoterica of any particular medium. Comic books are perfect for this, with multiple titles and weekly stories that span months and even years. But what happens when you become a lifetime comic book geek? Then you have to keep track of stories that span generations.

Blackest Night, DC’s most recent (and most recently successful) crossover event, is the ultimate fan wank for longtime readers of the DCU. Death may be a revolving door in comic books, but for some 2nd and 3rd string characters it is rather more permanent. Blackest Night brings back nearly every “permanently” deceased character for the last 20+ years since 1986, and provides and explanation for why the first-stringers can’t seem to stay dead.

Find out how this great strength of story for long-time fans is also this event’s greatest weakness, and what we can come to expect from a universe where the near-absolute authority of the Green Lanterns seems to be drawing to a close.

Powet Alphabet: B is for Batman Beyond

Since the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

Apathy. Greed. Corruption. Power. Hope.
Batman Beyond.
Courage. Honor. Justice.

These are the words that flash by during the opening credits of Batman Beyond. The series takes place in a not too distant future where corporate greed and power have taken over. Bruce Wayne has hung up the cowl, giving up his life as Batman, for reasons only partially explained in the two-part series opener. Further reasons would be hinted at in many episodes, but we wouldn’t really get an idea until the straight-to-DVD movie, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker was released.
