The Avengers Movie: Spy Cam Footage of Thor and Captain America!

The above image isn’t all that spoilery. You know that The Avengers is the big screen team up of some of Marvel comics’ most famous heroes. There was a quick official teaser last month. Now we have this summer’s two most popular characters, Captain America and Thor, on set and in costume.

The footage after the cut of course is missing all the special effects work you would expect from this movie, but some might consider it a spoiler so watch at your own risk. You’ll find a gallery of still images at SplashNews

John Carter Trailer Looks Promising

When you hear “John Carter of Mars” do you think of Noah Wyle’s character from ER getting his ass to Mars? Me neither, but here’s a picture that will make sure you will…

ER's Noah Wyle is Doctor John Carter of Mars

Until a few days ago I had not heard of this character, but after Captain Genius brought this to my attention at our forums, this sounds like a great premise for this upcoming movie. Here’s the trailer for Disney’s John Carter which is due to be released in March of next year:

The film is written and directed by Andrew Stanton who wrote and directed many Pixar movies, including Wall-E, so it looks like it’s in good hands.

John Carter fiction dates back to 1911 with A Princess of Mars which has John Carter, an immortal man, traveling to Mars to have great adventures. Here’s hoping someone, anyone, says “2 weeks” in this movie…

Powet Alphabet: K is for Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts Banner

Since the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

The Kingdom Hearts franchise is a series of video games which varies in quality from amazing to barely playable. Let’s look at the series at it’s best and worst.

The concept was a weird one that didn’t seem to mesh at all. Take some Disney characters, throw them in with a bunch of Final Fantasy characters, toss in a few Keyblades and see what comes up. The result, it would seem, was something gamers really took to.

Kingdom Hearts - Sora and Bambi

Though the game was Japanese first, it included a ton of Disney characters. The concept in the first game on the PlayStation 2 was basically that each new world was based on a new Disney movie which brought it’s characters into the fold as well. Even amongst the Disney characters the range of types of movies varied greatly, but they still managed to coexist in the rich world that was created quite well.

The game’s Hero is accompanied by Donald Duck, Goofy and Jiminy Cricket. Disney themed worlds are based on Alice in Wonderland, Hercules, Tarzan, Winnie the Pooh, Aladdin, Pinnochio, The Little Mermaid, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Peter Pan. Beyond these worlds other characters from other Disney properties make appearances. We see Mickey, Minnie, the Brooms from Fantasia, Merlin, 101 Dalmatians, the Fairy Godmother and Cinderella, Aurora and Maleficent, Snow White, Belle and the Beast, Simba, Dumbo, Bambi, Mushu, Chip and Dale and Huey, Dewey and Louis.

Darkwing Duck dressed as Sailor Moon

Darkwing Duck as Sailor Moon
I am the danger that fights evil by moonlight! I am the middle schooler that wins love by daylight! I am … Sailor … Duck?

Here’s Drake Malard aka Darkwing Duck from issue #8 of Boom’s recent Darkwing Duck comic, dressed as Sailor Moon! This is hardly the only cameo in this issue, as a seemingly endless number of alternate Darkwing Ducks all appear and it seems any mildly relevant comic or pop culture character from the past several decades makes an appearance. Tron, Sherlock Holmes, Where’s Waldo and more and more and more and … more.

Just check out a few examples from just that frame:

Thanks to poster Twighligh Ghost for bringing this to my attention in a post in the otherwise deserted alt.fan.sailor-moon newsgroup.

Jake T. Austin returning as Max on Wizards of Waverly Place

Justin and Alex turn Max into Maxine in Wizards of Waverly Place
Update 2011-03-09: I was wrong! Max returns this Friday, March 11th.

It looks like Jake T. Austin will finally be returning as Max on the hit Disney show Wizards of Waverly Place. Earlier this year Jake’s character Max was turned into a young girl in an unexpected twist and it wasn’t clear how long this change would last. Today Jake T. Austin confirmed in this twitter post that he’s “back on wizards set”.

So when will he be back? According to this twitter post by the show’s writer Todd J. Greenwald they are doing the table reading for the show’s 100th episode today. Max turned into Maxine, played by Bailee Madison, in episode 84 which aired on January 7th. The latest episode to air was episode 86 which aired last Friday. This would mean some 14 more episodes will play before Max’s return, though with Disney Channel’s erratic schedule who can say when this would be.

Powet Alphabet: L is for Shia LaBeouf

Shia LaBeouf in the Even Stevens episode "Lucious Lou"
Since the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

Shia LaBeouf, the greatest actor of our time, has done many amazing things, yet is constantly the butt of fanboy’s jokes as they accuse him of having raped their childhood. Let’s take a look at the life of this amazing man!

Shia was born in a Jewish hippy household in 1986. His family name “LaBeouf” is a spelling nightmare of the French “Le Boeuf” or “The Bull”. With parents that were free spirited performers it’s no surprise he made the career choices that he did. LaBeouf, who has a natural comedic talent which is often overlooked, began performing at comedy clubs as young as the age of 10, and pursued various shitty roles in TV shows until his big break.

In 1999 Shia landed the lead role in the Disney Channel comedy series Even Stevens. This was a hilarious show which to this day is the only thing to fully exploit his vast array of comedic ability. Even at 13 years old right from the first season this show featured some hilarious episodes like “Battle of the Bands” and “Movie Madness” which are full of top notch performances by Shia.

Alex Paints an Anarchy Symbol in Wizards of Waverly Place

Anarchy Symbol in Wizards of Waverly Place

Another fun little Easter Egg from the Disney TV show “Wizards of Waverly Place”. In episode 23 of season 2, “Paint by Committee”, Alex Russo, played by Selena Gomez, paints a giant letter A on a wall in an abandoned train tunnel. When asked about it’s meaning she says “It’s my initial in a circle representing … my initial in a circle.” but the symbol bears a striking resemblance to an anarchy symbol.

Anarchy SymbolWhat could be the symbolism behind this logo? Alex Russo is a pretty free spirited girl, often opposing authority and rules, so the anarchy symbol certainly applies on a fairly superficial level, but I wouldn’t go so far as to suggest the art department be insinuating we all be better off in a world without Government.

Later in the episode as Alex paints her mural “New York Above and Below” we can once again see the iconic “initial in a circle” shown in the below portion referred to as the “gritty grimy New York, filled with barf”.

Wizards of Waverly Place is known for hiding such symbols. Alex Russo can be seen wearing peace symbols as part of various outfits throughout the show. These occur so frequently that an effort is made to include at least one peace symbol in Selena Gomez’s outfits in every episode of season 2. As opposed to the anarchy symbolism, the crew have made clear that they have strong feelings about putting forth a positive message of peace. Earlier this month Powet reported on Selena wearing an I love hoe bags t-shirt. Though in that case it may have been a mere coincidence, this painting’s resemblance to an anarchy symbol seems to be more than chance.

“I Love Hoe Bags” Shirt in Wizards of Waverly Place

I love hoe bags shirt

I spotted this shirt in an episode of the Disney TV show “Wizards of Waverly Place” earlier this week. Here we have Selena Gomez’s character Alex Russo wearing an interesting shirt. It’s hard to see what the full text on this shirt says but from the two shorts scenes it’s shown in the only visible letters for the most part read “I <3 Hoe Bags".

Alex Russo loves hoe bags I love ho bags

Is this specific shirt placement intentional? It seems like quite an oversight to have half a shirt’s message obstructed from view in a well assembled outfit on the show’s main character but this could just be a coincidence. The text of the full shirt is “I <3 Shoes, Bags & Boys“. I don’t know that this message is terribly well reflected in a show that doesn’t really focus on a girl’s love of bags that much. No shortage of shoes and boys though…

If you’re looking for the episode in which this shirt appears it’s the 5th episode of season 2, “Alex’s Brother Maximan” in which Justin builds a robot, Max dresses up as a superhero to fight crime and Alex has a date with Dean at the skate park. The shirt appears around the middle of the episode.
