$20 Game of the Week: Intrusion 2 (PC, MAC)

intrusion

You know what was great about old school action games? You didn’t need upgradable stats, cinematics, a-list voice talent, or any other bells and whistles. No sir, all you needed was a bunch of enemies to shoot as you ran to the right of the screen and a bunch of weapons to shoot them with. Intrusion 2, the sequel to a 2008 flash game brings back this action. Developer Aleksey Abramenko spent three years on this title, and it was worth every minute. Playing as some guy, you set out to stop a bunch of bad guys for whatever reason, but did you ever play these types of games for the plot? Ninja please. If you want story, go play some Final Fantasy. All you need to know is that there a shitload of bad guys who need to be murdered to death. Got it?

Red Band Trailer: The Last Stand

last_stand_ver1

The Last Stand is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first major film since leaving the office of Governor of California. He portrays small town sheriff, Ray Owens enjoying his day off, when a high profile drug kingpin comes through town trying to cross the border to Mexico.

I put the video after the jump because it had autoplay enabled. My favoritest feature in all the internet.

This feels very much along the lines of a classic Schwarzenegger movie. What will really be interesting is if such a film can compete in the modern box office.
The Last Stand comes to theaters on January 18th.

The Powet Top 5 – Best movies of 2012

Welcome to the Powet Top 5, where we explore the top (and bottom) 5 items we think are relevant to any of a variety of topics that span the imagination. Sit back, read, and respond

21 Jump Street - Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill

2012 is now behind us. The year came with it’s share of decent movies. I made a pact with some friends to catch most of the summer movies and aside from that crappy Spider-Man flick I can honestly say I had a good time at all of them. So here’s a look at my top 5 personal favourites of the year. I’m sure to miss some of your favourites so feel free to let me know why I’m wrong in the comments!

I already discussed my favourites of 2012 on this week’s Powetcast. I took a little more time to look over the year’s movies before putting together my final list. I also made sure I saw the Hobbit before I wrote this article, though you will notice that I found it undeserving of being included.

Lost Classics: Star Wars (NES)

Beam Software developed this 1991 NES adaptation of A New Hope. You play as Luke Skywalker as you make your way through the sands of Tattoine, explore the Mos Esiley Cantina, and you know the rest, it’s freakin STAR WARS! You’ll encounter Han Solo and Princess Leia, and you can even play as them. However, they only have one life. If they get killed, Obi Wan Kenobi can revive them a limited number of times. There are also shooter segments where you fly the Millennium Falcon. The game’s soundtrack also contains NES versions of the familiar themes. The controls are touchy and it lead to several frustrating deaths, but it’s still an excellent movie tie-in on the NES. And it’s nowhere near as bad as Namco’s bizarre Japanese version.

Powetcast 148: Call Me, Maybe?

In this, the first podcast of 2013 (if you don’t count the one Famicom Dojo posted yesterday), we look back at 2012 and offer some resolutions for 2013.

Zac talks Sleepwalk With Me, Adam makes a startling inappropriate comment about women, and Captain Genius gets his search history corrupted as he tries to keep up.

and then Zac and Adam sing “Call Me Maybe!”

This is both the worst and the best episode of 2013! Enjoy!

The Powetcast theme song, “Button Masher” is now available for free download!

Famicom Dojo Podcast: Play as the Villain

Rarely do games place you in the role of the villain. Either it’s too difficult, tongue-in-cheek and therefore not serious, or being a villain is ultimately too unpalatable to pull off except for the briefest moments. Vinnk and Sean take a look at the games that try to bridge this gap, whether or not they were successful, and just which ones are worth playing — even if it’s juts for laughs. Also, we DIDN’T forget the most obvious example, we just saved the best for last!

MAGfest 11: Pre-Event Lineup

Another year has gone by and another MAGfest is upon us. Last year, Sean Orange and I made the trek to MAGfest X to take part in the 4-day music and gaming geekery that surrounded us, and this year we’ll be doing another round and taking in all the highlights (and even maybe some hilarious lowlights!) that the event has to offer.

This year features 3 special guests in terms of composers. Following up last year’s spectacular appearance by Final Fantasy’s Nobou Uematsu, MAGfest XI has the legendary combined talents of Kuniyo Yamashita (Castlevania, MegaMan X3), Chris Huelsbeck (Turrican Series, R-Type) and the great Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage, Actraiser) gracing the Gaylord National Harbor hotel. This will also be the first time Koshiro will be playing a DJ set in US shores, which provides event-goers with an extra special treat!

There are a huge amount of bands and performances this year as well; 38 concerts and visual performances to be exact! (the largest amount thus far!) Included in the lineup are mainstays such as Metroid Metal, The One-Ups and The Megas, but also included are a ton of new-comers to the MAGfest scene such as Lords of Thunder, Fighting in the Streets and The Tri-Force Quartet. There’s even band-personifications of two of the better institutions for video game music arranging: Overclocked Remix’s Overclocked University and Dwelling of Duels Live! Throw in tons of panelist and entertains like Arin “Egoraptor” Hanson, The Angry Video Game Nerd and yet another return by Jon St. John, and you’ve got the most ambitious MAGfest to date!

The event runs January 3-6 at the Gaylord National Harbor Hotel, Maryland with tell that there are tons of tickets still available at the door. Sean and I will bring coverage of the fun little things we run across at this gamer’s paradise and bring it to you for your viewing enjoyment.
