Maximum Letdown: Black College Football – The Experience: Doug Williams Edition (Xbox 360)

I had really high hopes for this game. Obviously it wasn’t going to be the next Madden out the gate (or even NFL Blitz), but there was a lot to like about it, and for the right reasons. For one, it’s development team features several black female programmers, and the developer, Nerjyzed Entertainment is headed by a black female CEO. The company’s mission is to produce games which promote the more positive aspects of minority cultures. While BCFX is a good note to start on, it tends to fall flat during the execution.

$20 Game of the Week: Final Fantasy XIII(Xbox 360, PS3)

Yes, I know I’m asking for heat by covering what is perhaps the least loved Final Fantasy title since 7. However, despite it’s linearity, the game’s story is every bit as epic as the previous entries in the series. Final Fantasy XIII takes place within a place known as Coccon, a sky city which floats above a larger world known as pulse. The mysterious gods who keep Cocoon afloat have the ability to mark various humans, making them into thier servants. These servants, called L’Cie are given a task to complete. If they do, they turn into crystals. If they don’t, they become mindless monsters. A cruel government purges citizens who are suspected to be L’Cie, supposedly sending them to the Pulse. In actuality, they are being killed off in mass exterminations. The main character in this story is a woman named Lightning, whose sister was one of the L’Cie. In true Final Fantasy fashion, you run into other people, each with their own stories and complex relationships.

The Powet Top 5 – GI Joe Playsets

Welcome, Poweteers, to a brand new original column where we explore the top (and bottom) 5 items we think are relevant to any of a variety of topics that span the imagination. Sit back, read, and respond!

My original intention for this inaugural article was to think up 5 of what I consider to be the top action figure playsets. The more I thought about the topic, though, the more GI Joe playsets came to mind. So many in fact, that I decided to dedicate the entirety of the list to those playsets.

Also, as a small disclaimer, all images from this post originate from YoJoe.com. Its probably the best archival GI Joe toy site on the net. I’ve placed links to each listed item’s entry below. Check them out for more info and pictures!

PowetToys Quickie – Legends Class Autobot Hound and G2 Megatron

Today, we have two more entries in the PowetToys category. These are quick looks at very basic figures with no audio. These do not replace full reviews, but are a way to give some attention to figures that just don’t have as much to talk about as those that get the full review treatment. Above we have Transformers Universe (2008) Autobot Hound. These came out just after the first movie’s toy line ran its course, if memory serves correctly. After the jump, we have the Transformers Universe (2008) Legends Class G2 Megatron figure.

$20 Game of the Week: The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

To think it was over 5 years ago when I first put out a hands-on feature about this game. With Skryim right around the corner, now is the perfect time to do a follow up. For those of you who missed the hands on, Oblivion is the follow up to ES3: Morrowind, which was one of my favorite games on the original Xbox. As much as I liked Morrowind, it was far from perfect, so naturally when I heard about Oblivion, I was buzzed. Not only would it be a next generation installment of the franchise, the folks at Bethesda Softworks would fix all the issues in Morrowind. When the end product was released, it was a beautiful thing indeed. Not only did Bethesda live up to its promises, it (along with EA’s Fight Night Round 3 which was also released that week) helped to put a definitive end to the “Xbox 1.5” jokes and created one of the greatest games in any console generation.

Gears of War 3 Beta Preview Video – Dedicated Execution

Gears Of War’s first two entries contained memorable single player and co-op modes that few other games could touch.

The online multiplayer for both left a lot to be desired, being riddled with balance problems and lag. Even when they were fixed, many in the community had moved on to other games. Epic is making a huge effort to insure Gears Of War 3 ships with a great multiplayer out of the box with an actual beta test this time around.

The unspoken truth of this preview video is that if they did a beta for Gears 2 as well, it might not have been unplayable shit for the first 2 months after release. Here is hoping Gears 3 might spin a little longer in the disc tray and have an online game worthy of its single player.

$20 Game of the Week: Mega Man 10 (Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, WiiWare)

Mega man 9 was a clever throwback to the franchise’s NES origins. It resonated so well with players that Capcom decided to take the Blue Bomber on another trip down memory lane with Mega Man 10. A virus has gripped robots all around the world, including Mega Man’s ‘sister’ Roll. Thus, Mega Man has to team with his ‘brother’ Protoman to find a cure. It’s classic 8-bit Mega Man action, just the way you like it, although it has a few new twists.
