Quake Gets a New Episode From Wolfenstein: New Order Developers Just in Time for 20th Anniversary

It’s a great time to be an old school gamer, especially if you got a PC. Between tons of HD Remasters, a steady stream of Gog.com and steam re-releases, a ton of DOS games made available, upcoming remakes and spiritual successors, mod support for Sega Genesis titles, and new content for games from as far back as 2 decades ago, it’s getting easier and more tempting to revisit the classic (and not so classic) titles of yesteryear. Thanks to machinegames, the guys behind 2014’s Wolfenstein: The New Order, there’s a brand new Quake episode available. That’s right, Quake. From 1996. Check it out above. If you need help on installing it, check out this post on Kotau.

E3 2016: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Although Nintendo’s presentation was brief, one of the few games they showed off, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild easily stole the show. Although details on the plot itself were scarce, it’s clear that there are a number of changes to the game, not the least of which is that the game takes place in an open world similar to western RPGS like Skyrim, Gothic, and Kingdoms of Amalur. According to Nintendo, the game’s world is at least 10 times bigger than that of Twilight Princess. Link can use a horse to get around, and will have to rely on food and clothing, so it appears there is a survival mechanic built into the game. Also for the first time in the series (not counting the CD-I entries), there is actual voice acting and dialogue! Sadly, the game won’t be out until next year on both the Wii U and the upcoming NX. In the meantime, check out Gamespot’s 25 reasons why Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild may be the coolest, craziest Zelda yet.

Possible Pre E3 2016: Dead Rising 4

dr1
E3 kicks off next week with press conferences starting as early as Next Sunday. However, we already have the skinny on a game that might be making an appearance. A site called thisgengaming is reporting that Capcom Vancouver is developing Dead Rising 4, which looks to be a remake of the original Dead Rising, albeit with a Christmas theme. If rumors are to be believed, the game will feature online features, co-op, and Unreal Engine 4 graphics. The game is believed to be an Xbox One/Windows 10 exclusive our website. We’ll likely learn more next week at E3.

Disney Infinity and Microsoft Spark Cancellation and Analysis

gamegraveyear

This past week, we learned that Disney Infinity had been cancelled due to Disney Interactive’s decision to abandon console gaming. To add insult to injury, the company is closing down its internal studio Avalanche Software, leaving close to 300 people without work (hopefully not for long). This summer will see the release of two final playsets based upon Alice:Through the Looking Glass and Finding Dory. Even Worse, Microsoft decided to shutdown its Project Spark, the Xbox One and PC set of game creation tools that allowed users to create and upload games LittleBigPlanet style. Microsoft ended active development on the game back in September, releasing all the game’s dlc for free. As of August 12, the game will no longer have online access, as players will be unable to download content or upload to the cloud. The reason given for Project Spark’s cancellation was that most of the people involved with the project had moved on to other areas within Microsoft, it wasn’t feasible to continue supporting the project. Fortunately, unlike the last time Microsoft cancelled a big name game (Fable Legends) no studio was shutdown nor was anyone fired as a result. At any rate, this isn’t a good look for Microsoft, as this is at least the third title the company has cancelled (the first two being The Phantom Dust reboot and the aforementioned Fable Legends). Maybe we’ll hear about a replacement for Project Spark next month at E3.

As far as Disney Infinity, click after the jump to learn about scrapped plans, speculation, and possible reasons for cancellation.

Steam Sega Genesis Games get a User Interface and……..Mods?

sega

Ever since the end of the 16 bit era, Sega has been making it’s back catalog of Sega Genesis titles in any way they can, starting with the Sega Smash Pack on Dreamcast, compilations on PS2, Xbox 360, and PS3, re-releases on digital platforms such as android, iOS, and Xbox Live, and more recently Steam. Speaking of Steam, the genesis re-leases were simply bundles of titles with not much of an interface. It was pretty lacking compared to say, Sonic’s Mega Genesis Collection. However, this changed as of a few weeks ago thanks to D3 entertainment. If you own any of Steam’s Sega Genesis games (which include everything from Comix Zone and Streets of Rage to Eternal Champions and Crackdown), you now have access to SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Classics collection. Upon firing it up, you’ll find yourself in a 3-D room full of 90s Genesis memorabilia, including a couple of issues of Sonic’s comic book. You can adjust any of the options and launch a title by picking it off your shelf. The room’s day and night cycle is controlled by your clock. Not to shabby. However the real treat is that SGMDC now supports the Steam Workshop, Steam’s mod database. That’s right, now you can legally romhack Genesis games. You’ll find everything on the workshop from versions of Sonic featuring Mario and Kirby, Japanese versions of certain games, and what may very well be the greatest Sega mod of all time, “Streets of Rage II except enemies make weird Tim Allen noises when they die”. There is already a selection of Sega games on Steam right now, hopefully this means we’ll see more. Maybe even some Sega CD games, or even Sega Saturn titles!
