Earlier this week we learned that the next Call of Duty will take gamers into space. Meanwhile, EA/Dice are looking towards the past to bring gamers the future of EA’s Battlefield shooter, WWI to be specific. Check out the trailer below, and a few tidbits after the jump.

2D Boxshot Wizard v1.1

From the trailer, it looks like there will be some melee combat, period-era weaponry, biplanes, and even horseback riding pop over to this website. A few interesting things to note: while the cover is the standard “soldier standing in front of an explosion getting ready to fire” that we see in many modern shooters, the cover guy is in fact black, something we usually don’t see in these games. It seems he was inspired by the 398th regiment, a.k.a the Harlem Hellfighters, a predominantly African American fighting unit. In fact, a collector’s edition features goodies and DLC inspired by the unit.

Also in the trailer you’ll note that there is a Bedouin horsewoman. According to lead designer Daniel Berlin, she’ll be a playable character in the game’s single play campaign. We’ll learn more about the game at EA’s Let’s Play event on June 12 and at E3. Kudos to EA and Dice for some added diversity in it’s game. Like with last year’s Hardline, EA is doing something different with it’s shooter franchise. Hopefully the single player will finally be just as compelling as the multiplayer. In related news, Battlefield 4 and Hardline will receive free DLC as part of EA’s Road to Battlefield promotion. Dragon Teeth for Battlefield 4 is available from now until May 10.
