The A-Team + Gears Of War = This Video

Mash-ups like this are appearing with greater frequency every day, but I’ll be darned if I don’t enjoy them when they’re good.

Here’s the opening titles to The A-Team with footage from Gears Of War.

WIRED 40 for 2007

wired1504.jpg
WIRED Magazine has just released their annual list spotlighting the best and brightest companies in tech.

The Wired 40 this year puts Nintendo on the list for the first time at an astounding #6. Microsoft, unstoppable juggernaut of the industry they are, barely made the list at #40. Don’t feel too bad for them: Sony didn’t make the list at all. Google and Apple retain their 1 & 2 spots from last year.

Bonus: a lenticular cover featuring The Office‘s Jenna Fischer.

South Park Studios profiled on Apple.com

southparkmac.jpg South Park may have a real simple look, but it takes 34 Apple G5 workstations and a hundreds of thousands of dollars in off the shelf software to give it that look.

Apple.com’s “Pro” section takes a look inside what it takes to produce the show. Though heavy on Mac evangilism (it is Apple’s site), the article contains some interesting information about South Park Studios. They work 120 Hour weeks during the season to get a show done in time for broadcast so its as current as that day’s news. I always assumed Comedy Central never ran clips in commercials because the show was hard to advertise in advance, or they didn’t want to spoil the jokes. Its actually because South Park is delivered mere hours before its aired.

Folding@Home@PS3

folding.jpg
Cure for cancer, cure for AIDS, make a gamer want to not play PS3 for days.

Distributed computing has been done for years on PC. Sci-Fi nerds spare cycles and bandwidth to help the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence for example.

Now with the super powerful Cell processor combined with a current lack of compelling software, Stanford University’s chemistry department has released a version of their Folding@home software on Playstation 3. Basically you can turn it on, and let it run while you’re not playing games and Stanford will use your game machine’s horsepower to run simulations of protein folding. Understanding the hows and whys is beyond me, but the research is currently being used to explore cures for various ailments, including some cancers and Alzheimers.

So go ahead and download it on PS3, you’ll find it on your XrossMediaBar under the network icon. Or if you like the idea you can toss it on your PC, Mac, or Linux box.

Transformers 2007: Hugo Weaving is Megatron, 100 days until release

weavingmegatron.jpg
SectorSeven.org, the viral marketing website based on the secret government organization in the 2007 Transformers movie has been updated with a startling confirmation of a cast member. Use password “NBETWO” to gain access to the site, and you’ll find the following email…

Operation Hungry Dragon 2 continues. As of today agent H. Weaving has officially convinced S.S., M.B., R.O. and A.K. to oversee the Megaman issue. The recording will commence immediately.

All the years of investment into Agent Weavings public persona have finally paid off. We will monitor the campaign from the inside and report on its progress free from suspicion.

By this summer, the population will think N.B.E.’s are nothing more then figments of an overactive imagination.

Our power lies in our secrecy.

Just to translate some of the jargon… “NBE” means Non-Biological Organism and “Megaman” has been the code word used for anything referring to Megatron. As for the Initials, you’re looking at producer Steven Spielberg, Director Michael Bay, and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. H. Weaving is none other than Hugo Weaving, seen prominently as Agent Smith in the Matrix series and Elrond in Lord Of The Rings.

IESB reported in January that it was a neck-and-neck race between Weaving and original Transformers series Megatron Frank Welker. Now it appears that the choice has been made and voice recording will commence immediately.

Michael Bay has also updated his website with a letter. Some strong language follows after the cut… [Read the rest of this entry…]

Bruce Timm talks Superman: Doomsday

doomsday.jpg
Bruce Timm is responsible directly for some of the best animated series I’ve ever seen. Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League are constantly called by any fan of comics the most faithful and respectful translations of the characters from the page to the screen.

Bruce is still animating DC Comics characters, but this time for direct-to-DVD movies. Newsarama has a 2 part interview up, the first goes over his history, but the second gets to the new stuff, specifically some lingering questions about the animated adaptation of the Death and Return of Superman comic. The film will only run 75 minutes, cutting out all the fat of the 30+ issues of the original story and just sticking to the basics.

No League. No Supergirl. Not even any blood, since they’re aiming for a PG 13 rating. Still, he seems pretty confident they can deliver a good version of the comic original.

Beyond Doomsday, he’s directing an adaptation of New Frontier and Teen Titans: Judas Contract.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-Am

athfznpa.jpg
Midway has sent out a press release concerning the long-awaited video game version of Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

This is of course the “combat golf game” we heard about last month. Its not due out until fall, and theres no screen shots yet, but we can’t blame Midway for wanting to strike while the iron’s hot for Aqua Teens with the movie.

I only hope and pray the game fully respects the show’s low budget quality. I want sprites and limited animation!

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army Details

hellboy.jpg
Hellboy was one of the best superhero movies in recent years, and cerainly deserves a quicker follow up than its taking. The original came out in 2004, the sequel is now due August 1, 2008. They had to jump ships from Sony to Universal in the process, but Hellboy should feel at home given the massive Universal monster movie archives.

SuperheroFlix has some details released by Universal on the movie. The immediate good news is the return of the principal cast and director Guillermo del Toro, working from a story by del Toro and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.

Hellboy, if you don’t know, is based on a Dark Horse comic. He’s a demon from Hell, summoned by the Nazis as a baby, but recruited into work for the US as a paranormal investigator. He files down his gigantic horns to stumps, eats immense amounts of food, has a giant revolver in his left hand, and a giant fist on his right.

Filming should begin in May on location in Budapest.

Get the rest of the fact sheet and a synopsis of the movie after the jump!
