Transformers: Bigger than Spider-Man

Bigger than Spiderman

If you had told me 20 years ago, after the abysmal box office showing that was the original Transformers animated feature, that a Transformers film would outdo Spider-Man’s opening week gross, I would have said, “What, that weird kid that appeared in the comic book? So?”

Sorry, run that forward a little bit.

If you had told me five years ago, after Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film made $400 million at the domestic box office, breaking records along the way, that a Transformers film would (so far) outdo that hot property the same year as the third installment, I would have laughed. If the best that the Aquaman property could hope for was to beat Spider-Man in a fictional scenario in the HBO series Entourage, surely in the real world a toy company’s property had even less of a chance.

Well, now Michael Bay is laughing. All the way to his gold-plated Camaro. (Goldbug?)

The Transformers opening 6-day gross of over $155 milion has beaten out Spider-Man’s $151 million, and so far it shows little sign of slowing down. Along the way, it garnered the highest opening Tuesday ever (by $12 million dollars — up 80% from now-second place), the third highest Wednesday ever (now fourth, thanks to Harry Potter’s new record-setting Wednesday premiere), and the title as the biggest opening week for a non-sequel in all of film history — the title which Spider-Man held until last Sunday.

New Avengers / Transformers #1Spider-Man is clearly not very happy about this development. Not content to leave the battle at the box office, our intrepid arachnid friend was last seen hurling himself into battle against the alien robot menace at the end of the first issue of the New Avengers / Transformers 4-part mini-series. Not since Transformers #3 — at the time a Marvel publication — have we seen these two clash. Guys, can’t we all just get along?

WiiWare Revealed

Wii Logo

Last night, Level Up reported via their Newsweek blog that NOA President Reggie Fils-Aime will be making an announcement about new WiiWare downloadable games: original titles similar to those of Xbox Live Arcade or the Playstation Network. Today it has become a reality!

According to the release, WiiWare™ is “a game-creation service that will allow developers large and small to create new downloadable video game content for sale by Nintendo through the Wii Shop Channel” that “paves the way for smaller, more creative games to make their way to the public at lower prices, without any inventory risk to developers.”

Projects will be announced a later date, with first WiiWare offerings will not be available until early 2008. There is no indication of who is involved, nor how the independent developers they hope to foster can gain access to this development kit.

Compare this to Microsoft’s XNA Studio, which allows developers to create games cross-compatible in both Windows XP/Vista and Xbox 360. The technology is readily available (and free!), although the development kit that allows you to test your code on your 360 has a subscription cost of $100 a year — a drop in the bucket for the development budget of any serious offering.

Check back with us as more news develops. In the mean time, leave a comment and let us know what kinds of games you’d make for the Wii!

The Nintendo Revolution

In keeping with the apparent Wii theme of the day, we have for you a short film that just went up yesterday which answers the question, “What will you do when the (Nintendo) revolution comes?”

It’s pretty much great:

(see if you can spot the Adult Swim reference!)

Transformers Shorts: On the Prowl

A pretty awesome video went up on YouTube yesterday:

It’s not terribly heavy on story, but technically this video is a marvel. The opening sequence is excellent (looks like it took longer to do than the rest of the “episode”), and the cinematography and sounds effects are definitely top-notch. (I just wish the voices were better…)

I definitely want to see more of this. If you like it too, we can make a point if letting you know when new episodes are available, but I’d definitely recommend telling the creator directly and/or subscribing to their videos!

80GB PS3 Unveiled, South Korea shrugs

What do you do with the discontinued 20GB PS3? Cram it on top of the 60GB model, of course!

MSNBC reports that the new model will go on sale in South Korea this June.

Coming only days after Starcraft II was unveiled at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational, it is completely unlikely that this ill-timed news will make a dent in the current euphoria.

There are presently no announced plans to bring this model to US shores, so for those of you extremely jealous of the Korean peninsula this week, relief will not be immediately forthcoming.
