Fast and Furious 6 trailer – vehicular warfare

The Fast and Furious 6 is coming our way Memorial Day 2013 (May 27). We get our first look at some of the plot in this first extended trailer. Looks like pretty much the whole cast is back including Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Paul Walker, among others.

I don’t really find anything extraordinary about this franchise, but I think its pretty far from awful too. You sit down and watch one of these movies and you are going to be entertained. You may not leave the theater with a new outlook on life, but you probably won’t feel as though you’ve wasted the evening. So far, this sixth installment feels in line with all of that.

Pacific Rim movie trailer

Its movie trailer madness this week! The Pacific Rim trailer dropped at some point yesterday. I had never even heard of this movie before, but its directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth). It is some kind of cross between Godzilla, Gundam and Evangelion. I think I love it. This blows the GI Joe Retaliation and Man of Steel trailers out of the water.

Lost Classics: Wrestling with Shadows (DVD Movie)

Yay! Another non-gaming Lost Classic! To be fair, the subject of this movie was featured in several WWF/E and WCW video games as well as Acclaim’s Legends of Wrestling.

Movie Review: Cloud Atlas

I had seen a trailer for Cloud Atlas not very long ago. I didn’t really understand it, but it piqued my curiosity. There appeared to be some elements of science fiction and adventure involved that appealed to me. From what I had heard it was based on a novel that was supposed to be unfilmable. Several days after experiencing the movie, I am still thinking about it. And I say ‘experience’ because one does not simply watch this movie, you become involved in it. If you like Cloud Atlas, despite its 172 minute run-time, it is unlikely that you will be satisfied with a single viewing.

Cloud Atlas is, in fact, six separate stories set in different eras, but all told in parallel. Initially, the jumping back and forth between six different plots is confusing and disorienting, but as things progress, it becomes increasingly easy to follow since we are not bogged down by any unnecessary elements in the plots. These are fairly terse short stories weaved together with physical and thematic ties. While it is tempting to try and keep track of everything from the outset, don’t. Just sit back and enjoy the film, the pieces will come together as they are meant.

Read on for more details of the plots and my reactions.

Powet Top 5 – Top 5 Movie Adaptations

Welcome to the Powet Top 5, where we explore the top (and bottom) 5 items we think are relevant to any of a variety of topics that span the imagination. Sit back, read, and respond.

Thankfully, Eat, Pray, Love never received a video game adaptation (well, none that I know of anyway). If it did, I'd like to think of it as a game with a focus on stealth, cover, rpg-like stat building, and metroid style exploration. Kinda like Bioshock meets Metal Gear Solid, except Nora Roberts was writing the plot instead of Hideo Kojima. Oh, and there would be co-op and multiplayer of course.

Movie adaptations are the junk food of the gaming industry. Yeah, they taste good and kids can’t get enough of them, but they just aren’t good for you. Most gaming adaptations fall prey to the same problem: developers rush to have them out in time for the movie’s release so they can cash in, and they spend more development resources on recreating the film than implementing proper gameplay mechanics. Thus, while that video game based on this year’s summer blockbuster might move huge units within the first few months after it’s release, it’ll be regulated to bargain bin shovelware status by this time next year, and often times before the dvd hits stores. However, there are several games that have managed to not only avoid this problem, but they became classics in their own right, doing justice to the movie they were based on. Here are 5 of the best.
