Famicom Dojo Podcast: 3DS The Third

Famicom Dojo Podcast 103: 3DS the Third

It’s a bit later than expected, but the 3DS has finally gotten the second stick (well, a nub really), and enough buttons to make it nearly feature complete with a Wii U GamePad. A herald of things to come for Nintendo, or sheer coincidence? Sean and Vinnk wonder if this is the next logical step for the 3DS, or merely a placeholder for what’s really coming next. Vinnks Zonks out with Future Retro, and Sean tries out a Nintendo classic finally coming to the US on 3DS Virtual Console. Vinnk adds another chapter to his Ace Attorney 5 saga in Pile of Shame, and Sean tries out Vindicators thanks to Reddit.

$20 Game of the Week: Bioshock Infinite (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)

Bioshock-Infinite-logo

Bioshock is the third (and likely final) entry in 2K/Irrational’s genre-bending FPS series. Infinite leaves the sunken dystopia of Rapture behind for the beautiful sky-island of Columbia. Players take control of former Pinkerton agent turned Private investigator Booker Dewitt as he infiltrates the island in search of a young woman with mysterious abilities. Of course the mission is anything but easy, as the island’s inhabitants and ruler Comstock exhibit the worst of early 20th century racism, sexism, and xenophobia. That’s not even mentioning the civil war taking place on the island and the nightmarish human/robotic amalgamations you’ll be doing battle with.

Famicom Dojo Podcast: Play It Again, Samus

Famcom Dojo Podcast 102: Play It Again, Samus

After the y cant metroid crawl meme sprang into being upon the release of Super Metroid on the Wii U Virtual Console, Sean recorded a bunch of footage performing tricks in the game, but it’s been over a year and we haven’t made it into a proper video yet. Sean put out the raw footage on another YouTube channel at the same time Phil was working through the GBA Metroid games. So we decided to talk to Phil about his experience playing through (quote-unquote) old 2D Metroid again! Sean and Phil talk about replaying the Game Boy Advance games, sequence breaking, and undocumented secrets in Super Metroid. Future Retro covers the unofficial Project M mod for Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii, and Pile of Shame laments how difficult it is to get back into Metroid Prime 2 after almost a decade.

$20 Game of the Week: Spec Ops: The Line (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

spec-ops-the-line

Remember when the Spec Ops series was just a poor man’s Delta Force/Rainbow Six? Ever since its 1998 debut, it was little more than a series of fairly solid, if forgettable, budget-priced Playstation, PC, and Dreamcast tactical military shooter games. That all changed with 2012’s Spec Ops: The Line, which was the first game in the series since 2002’s Spec Ops: Airborne Commando. You would be forgiven for dismissing it as another Call of Duty-esque military blastfest, however, if you do, you’d be missing out on one of the smartest games of this past console generation. While on the surface it’s no different from other cover-based military shooters on the market, Spec Ops is a deconstruction of the military shooter genre, a commentary of violence in video games, a look at the effects of PTSD on soldiers, and even a take on American interventionist policy.

Canceled Part 5: A Maximum Letdown Special

gaminggraveyard

This past memorial day, we remembered the brave men and women in our military who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We as gamers also remember the many games that have been left on the cutting room floor, some due to budget issues, others due to executive meddling, and others due to censorship. This list of titles once again mentions 10 games that didn’t make it past previews and concept stages. Some titles we were better off without. However, other titles were potential classics that were killed off before their time. All games mentioned deserved their time in the spotlight, even if metacritic would have given them a rating of only 5.5.

$20 Game of the Week: Sleeping Dogs (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)

Print

On its surface, Sleeping Dogs looks like your average Grand Theft Auto ripoff, and the similarities are there. You drive cars around an open world while taking on missions at your leisure. Hell, before Square-Enix picked the game up, Activision was slated to release it as a True Crime sequel. However, if you dismiss this as yet another GTA clone, you’d be cheating yourself out of one of the best and emotional stories of 2012. In the vein of Hong Kong crime movies such as Hard boiled and Internal Affairs, Sleeping Dogs’ story and gameplay will keep players hooked in a surprising way.
