Lost Classics: Super R-Type (SNES)

While this week’s Lost Classic may not be as quirky or unique as this week’s $20GOTW (or should that be FGOTW), it’s still worth its place among the shooter genre’s classics, even if there are a couple of huge flaws. Besides, R-Type is part of the holy trinity of horizontal side-scrolling shooters (its other two members include Konami’s Gradius and Taito’s Darius), so this game deserves a mention.

Sailor Moon: La Luna Splende DS game screenshots

Sailor Moon DS Game La Luna Splende Screenshots
Some screenshots have surfaced from the “Sailor Moon: La Luna Splende” Nintendo DS game which we previously reported will be released in Italy this Spring.

Sailor Moon DS Game La Luna Splende Screenshot Sailor Mars and a Bat

Sailor Mars and a Bat

We can only guess as to just how this game will play out but it looks like a classic side scroller kind of game not completely unlike the Sailor Moon S game for the Sega Game Gear.

Sailor Moon DS Game La Luna Splende Screenshot Sailor Moon vs. Lord Kaspar

Sailor Moon vs. Lord Kaspar

We see a “Sailor … vs. Lord Kaspar” screenshot for each of the five girls. Is this a screen showing for a boss battle? Maybe something for a one on one mode? Kaspar would be the Italian name for Kunzite or Malachite as he’s known in the dub. One nice thing seems to be that we shouldn’t need to put up with too much Italian text in this game from what we can see.

$20 errr…. Free Game of the Week: Tyrian (PC, iPhone, and Pretty Much any Other Platform The Open Source Version Has Been Ported To)

Before Unreal, Gears of War, and Bulletsotrm (and after Jazz Jackrabbit, ZZT, and Jill of the Jungle) Epic Megagames released this vertical scrolling shooter. While it contains classic shooter action in the vein of Raiden and Xevious, it contains a few tricks of its own that make it unique. The game was originally conceived as a tech demo by two friends Alexander Brandon and Jason Emery. It didn’t even have sound, although it was shopped out to both Epic and Apogee Software. Epic eventually considered the game a perfect fit for thier company, and hooked the team up with sound composers and graphic designers, and thus Tyrian was born. You play as Trent, a terraformation expert. After being sent to the planet Tyrian to do some terraforming work, your friend is assassinated by Microsol (not Microsoft), the corporation controlling the terraforming effort due to his knowledge of a rare mineral being mined on the planet. Realizing that you’re next on Microsol’s hit-list, you set out to make your escape.

DC Universe Classics Wave 17 is Blackest Night

I know this news has been out for a while, but I’m trying to catch up on news I missed during the busy holiday/year end period. I’m not a big DCUC collector, but I have to admit, this is one tempting wave. From the facebook reveal:

Well the rumors this time are true! Wave 17 for DCUC is coming soon and it is our first step into the Blackest Night!

While we do have more Blackest Night concepts in the wings, this wave should help whet fans appetite for all the colored Lantern goodness!

Wave 17 will consist of Orange Lantern Luthor, Yellow Lantern Scarecrow, White Lantern Hal Jordan (with Black Lantern Variant), Violet Lantern Wonder Woman, Blue Lantern Flash and Indigo Lantern Atom. Together they will create a Collect and Connect modern Anti-Monitor!

And to answer the inevitable question, we did look into Red Lantern Mera. The only way to do her right is with a 100% tool and for that cost we can do 4 other figures. So while she did not make the cut this time around, we do know fans want complete sets and we are committed to one day getting her out there!

For now, a very happy holidays from all of your friends at Mattycollector.com and we’ll see you all in the New Year. Wave 17 will be on sale in late Spring 2011!

Stephen Sommers not returning for GI Joe sequel

Its seems there are rumors swirling about that Stephen Sommers will not be returning to direct GI Joe 2. A few agents for other directors stated that they had been approached about their clients possibly directing the sequel. The Zombieland screenwriters already signed on over a year ago to pen the script. As recent as last August we had word that Sommers would be returning for the second movie, but it appears those plans have changed if the rumors are true.

Many Joe fans seem to have a strong opinion on this one way or another. Let us know what you think in the comments!
