New Transformers Classics Jetfire, Grimlock, and Mirage

Wave 1 is right around the corner (and you can see the bios here!), and as excited as everyone I’ve talked to has been for the first batch, our eyes are quickly darted toward wave 2!
TFW2005‘s Kickback and his awesome inside sources have come through with some pictures of Voyager Jetfire, and deluxe Grimlock and Mirage. Since their site has been slammed with traffic lately, I’ve taken the liberty of posting mirrors of the images.

Jetfire seems to be based on Stormbringer design, as seen in IDW’s latest Transformers anthology. Given artist Don Figueroa’s close relationship to Hasbro’s design team, this is no coincidence.

Superman Returns toys that might not suck

mongul.jpgMattel is obviously aware by now that the toy line to Superman Returns is little more than a couple thousand variations of Superman himself and 1 Luthor figure. I don’t blame them for not rushing to make plastic representations of Parker Posey and Kal Penn, but some variation is needed to keep the line from becoming worth of an ET/Atari2600-style landfill burial.

Thankfully, new toys are on the way!

Allegedly based off EA’s video game of Superman Returns, new figures include Mongul, Metallo, a NEW Luthor, and an even SHINIER Superman! Wow!

SDCC 2006: Day 3 and 4

San Diego Comic ConOk fans, get comfortable because there are a LOT of updates in this one. Instead of the usual breaking up the updates by company, this time around I’m going to break it up by properties (ie. Transformers, Marvel Superheroes, Star Trek, etc)

To view all the updates, continue on after the jump. Please note that I will be updating this constantly for a while until I feel I got everything I needed to.

This Week In Halo

freefallin.jpgThe biggest news in the Halo universe this week (this week having no Halo 3 news of course) is that Marvel and Bungie are going forth with an ongoing Halo comic book.

Frank O’Conner was also caught by a pirate at ComiCon, which explains why he didn’t pen this week’s update.

I found out about Halowiki, which is vast repository of information on Halo 2’s multiplayer. These guys are experts and mapped out every advantage and weakness of every weapon on every map. Best of all, they’re sharing the knowledge so we can all be better players. Of course it goes without saying they beat Bungie in 3 game match.

Last week some friends got up in arms about Oscar Winner Denzel Washington playing Master Chief John Spartan. Denzel was in New Zealand recently and was spotted chatting with Richard Taylor of the Weta special effects design team (Lord Of The Rings, King Kong). Apparently theres something wrong with a highly respected and talented actor lifting this franchise beyond its inferred b-grade game roots. Well relax, denizens of the internets: according to AICN Denzel was just making a visit to Weta workshop for another movie he’s directing. Richard Taylor isn’t even working on Halo, since Bungie is doing all art and conceptualization in-house. Weta is just going to build and model what Bungie designs.

If you like boxart and you like fan art, then how about some fan box art? With limited elements at hand and no knowledge of the game itself, these are some convincing Halo 3 covers.

Finally, Joyride studios made a new ODST figure for ComiCon. He’s limited to only 1200, and is probably gone by now. I can’t imagine how much this will fetch on the secondary market as first wave figures like Sgt Johnson already command $80 and over.

Botcon 2006 Exclusive Rattrap officially revealed

Botcon 2006 LogoBotcon.com has posted official images of the next exclusive for this year’s official Transformers convention. We have seen many pictures of this figure on ebay and elsewhere surface for the past couple months, but here it is finally in official paint scheme.

You might remember the previously announced figures, but if not here’s whats official so far:

Unofficially we’ve also seen:

  • A repainted Cybertron Defense Red Alert with remolded head as Megatron
  • A repainted RID Windshear with remolded head as Waspinator
  • A repainted energon divebomb that could be Terrorsaur

From this it seems pretty obvious we’re not just getting a maximal set of figures, but we can only speculate on that for the time being until things play themselves out.

Also, I was pretty disappointed that news of Rattrap’s revealing was not trickled through the email list of the Collector’s Club first. If I’m paying an annual US$40-60 membership, I expect news like this to be given to the members first and not have to find out via another news site, especially where the club and convention are so tightly coordinated.
