In this week’s Powetcast, we discuss how the character Thor translated from myth to comic to screen, and how this film fairs as the 4th chapter in the Avengers saga. We’ll also rehash our disappointment in the finale of Smallville, and preview the Marvel Anime universe coming to the states later this year.
Every major love in Clark Kent’s life has an alliterative “LL” name: Smallville-schoolboy-crush Lana Lang, army-brat-turned-sassy-and-sexy-metropolitan-reporter Lois Lane, and mermaid (MERMAID??) Lori Lemaris.
But let us not forget the enigmatic and powerful Lex Luthor.
Oh, come on, you can’t tell me that Lex doesn’t have a serious boy crush for Superman, why else hate him so much yet want to BE him at the same time?
Writers of many stripes have tried to answer that question since the character was introduced, but none have been quite as successful as John Byrne’s 1986 post-Crisis interpretation. Despite the many alterations since, this is the core of the character that has shone through.
The late Dwayne McDuffie had credits on over 60 episodes of the Cartoon Network Justice League Series. In the wake of is death, I wanted to review one of his most memorable episodes. This one has magic, aliens, multidimensional monsters, zombies, gangsters, and Aquaman!
“The Terror Beyond” is from the second season of Justice League, and like most episodes from the series, is split into two parts. It opens with the US Military hunting for a very large target, revealed to be Solomon Grundy. After a rocket propelled grenade to the face, Grundy chucks around some tanks like they were nothing. One tank fires a laser(!) on him, and as the military prepares to capture Grundy and take him in, Aquaman comes to his rescue. Riding atop a purple sea serpent, Aqauman announces “If you want to live, come with me” and the two escape under water. Now I remember how awesome this show is. Ha!
Aqauman arrives not in Atlantis, but the tower of Doctor Fate. Fate’s wife Inza greets them, and Grundy is offered a chest full of gold in exchange for some task or information. As a more immediate reward he scarfs down two cupcakes. Doctor Fate arrives and is pleased to me “Mr Grande.” [Read the rest of this entry…]
Mattel had a bunch of news of new products for its DC licensed line including DC Universe Classics, a new Young Justice line, the final year of Justice League Unlimited and a brand new Batman line.
Rob Pratt, an animator with Disney credits, has created a pretty brilliant little Superman cartoon. Its very short (about a minute) and the above video includes a message from Pratt about the production of the animation.
This is definitely worth watching, to see what one man can do with a little music for inspiration and little more than a pencil and a computer to do awesome hand drawn animation.
Waner Bros. Pictures has announced that British actor Henry Cavill has been cast to play Clark Kent/Superman in the 2012 Superman reboot directed by Zack Snyder. Cavill is best known for his role on Showtime’s The Tudors.
Tonight, Saint Nick will go about his rounds and deliver presents to all the good boys and girls. Tomorrow however, you’ll most likely be getting together with family. And we all know how much families hate each other, to the point where they want to beat the ever living shit out of one another. So instead of beating down your loved ones in real life, why not check out these games that let you do it in the video game world? [Read the rest of this entry…]
