Powetcast 107: Crisis Of Infinite Reboots

We already had our knee jerk reaction to the announcement, now comes the real deal: The Powetcast reacts to the new 52. The roundtable includes Zac Shipley, Captain Genius, Sean Orange, with special guest William West.

We’ll discuss our thoughts on the revamped DC Universe, theorize why some characters start from scratch and others don’t, and begrudgingly admit we all kinda like Rob Liefeld. We’ll also talk about the books that were worth reading and the ones we’re not going to continue on with #2.

Theft of Superman Collection from Avid Fan Solved

A few weeks ago, there was a story making the rounds on the comic scene about the story of Mike Meyer; a 48 year-old mentally disabled man from St,Louis who was an avid collector of Superman comics and memorabilia. Mike, who works part-time at McDonalds to supplement his SSDI that he collects for having a mental defect, was robbed of his entire collection of more 1,800 comics and several priceless Superman collectables such as lunch boxes and figurines, by a former co-worker of his who had swindled Mike into allowing him into his apartment and had his girlfriend distract Mike while he robbed the place of the collectables.

Upon reporting the theft and sharing his story with the St.Louis Post-Dispatch, word spread amongst the comic book community as a whole, and a collection drive was established with the intent of building back up Mr. Meyer’s collection for him from donations of fellow comic fans and celebrities. The drive ended up gaining donations from all over the country and even England and Australia, which were collected by a friend and delivered to Mike to his astonishment.

As of today, the story comes to an end, as the robber of Mike’s collection was caught after he robbed a elderly man of money and jewelry. (making him our douchebag of the month) He is currently charged with several counts of burglary and is being held on $100,000 bail. The whole story can be found on the Post Dispatch here.

Just a happy story of how the geek community helps its own, and a sweet tale to end your week on.

SDCC 2011: The Dark Knight Returns And Other DC Animation

Following a screening of Batman: Year One, WB animation producer Bruce Timm announced to the audience their next movie projects.
The next feature will be Justice League Doom, an adaptation of Tower of Babel. Following that will be Superman vs. The Elite, and then the long await The Dark Knight Returns.

The Dark Knight Returns will be Warner Premier’s first two part feature, and Timm said the movie will be very faithful to the original. No voice cast has been announced by Andrea Romano said she is interested in bringing long time Batman actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hammill on board. We first reported TDKR would be a future project in April.

Timm was also asked about Kingdom Come as a possible project, but said that the style of the artwork does not lend itself to 2D animation. The Killing Joke remains a possibility for the future.

SDCC 2011: LEGO gets both the DC and Marvel licenses

This morning, I caught wind that LEGO had gotten the full DC Comics license. The deal will allow LEGO to create figures and playsets based on the characters and properties of DC Comics. The line will launch in January with 13 characters including Joker, Bane, Lex Luthor, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. The first pieces from the line will be on display at the LEGO booth at SDCC 2011 this weekend along with 3,000 Batman and Green Lantern exclusive figures as part of a promotion for the line.

The Marvel announcement stated that their deal would similarly cover figures and playsets. The license would take effect January 1, 2012 and would start seeing products roll out about May of 2012. The Super Heroes Marvel Collection would focus on the Avengers movie as well as classic Spider-man and X-Men characters. Some of the characters specifically mentioned included Wolverine, Nick Fury, Magneto, Deadpool, Spider-man, Doctor Octopus, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Loki and more. Select items, again, will be on display at SDCC 2011 this weekend.

It looks like both licenses will be brought under LEGO’s new Super Heroes line. LEGO scored a major coup with these two licenses and surely dealt a very strong blow to Hasbro’s up and coming construction block brand, KRE-O. Can KRE-O strike back with Star Wars?
