Silent Hills Canceled, Playable Teaser to be Removed from PSN

SilentHillsCanceled

It would have been a dream collaboration, not to mention a desperately needed shot in the arm for the survival horror franchise: A Silent Hill title co-produced by Kojima Productions and Director/Writer/Producer Guillermo del Toro (Blade II, Pacific Rim, Hellboy). Sadly, it will remain to be just that, a dream. Hideo Kojima confirmed that he would be leaving Konami after the release of September’s Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, leaving the status of the project in the air. Sadly, it was confirmed via the twitter accounts of both actor Norman Reedus and Del Toro this past weekend that Silent Hills is indeed canceled. To add further insult to injury, PS4 owners will have until this Wednesday to download the playable teaser from the PSN store. Never before has a cancellation been so heartbreaking since Mega Man Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe a few years ago. Sadly, this isn’t the first time Del Toro was involved with a video game project that fell through; the title Insane was canceled in 2012 when would-be publisher THQ went bankrupt. Of course no doubt Konami will continue the Silent Hill series at some point. However, it will remain to be seen if anything Konami comes up would be as grand as what Kojima and Del Toro had planned for the series. If there is a bright spot in this whole fiasco, then there is a possibility that Del Toro and Kojima can take their talents to another company.

Famicom Dojo Podcast: Audio Bonus

Famicom Dojo Podcast 89: Audio Bonus

Sometimes the show runs a little long, or goes completely off-topic. That’s when we create an audio bonus, exclusively for the website! When we first started the podcast, we fully intended to create such extra content to help drive traffic back to the website since there was no other way to listen to it. But, as it turns out, people just don’t find that enticing! So, despite the desire to keep things “exclusive”, we want to share these audio bonuses with you in a way that most listeners will actually be able to hear it. They’re just so good! Sean and Vinnk comb the three year history of the Famicom Dojo Podcast for its best extras, and put them into this one episode: Vinnk unveils the hidden secret behind the unlicensed developer Color Dreams, Sindra and Vinnk bond over their love of Silent Hill, Sean gives a brief history of Superman films, and also explains how he got started making videos… before he was old enough to shave.

Famicom Dojo Podcast: Added Content

Added Content is not something you find much in video games any more. Long gone are the days of Infocom’s "feelies", but great text adventure classics like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy had some of the most creative in the business. Vinnk and Sean followup on their "DLC podcast" promise by adding episode content from listener requests! Guest panelist Sindra joins Sean to review the Silent Hill movie, while Vinnk reminisces about the days of hint lines, program books, and peril-sensitive sunglasses.

Famicom Dojo Podcast: Video Game Movies

Can a movie based on a video game ever be any good? If their Rotten Tomatoes scores are to be believed, these films are never critical darlings. Some find fans in niche places, but many are just… you know… BAD. Vinnk and SeanOrange plumb their memories of video game movies to find out if either of them belong to the “so-SO-bad-but-I-still-love-it-even-though-geez-it-sucks” club!

Akira Yamaoka Jumps Konami Ship?

akira_yamaokaAccording to gaming site Aeropause, and followed up on Resident Evil/Silent Hill fansite The Horror is Alive, word has it that long-time Konami composer Akira Yamaoka has left the big-name game publisher after 16 years of dedicated duty.

Yamaoka is most well known for his work done for the Silent Hill series of games, having almost single-handedly worked on everything from the first game right up to the yet-released re-make ‘Shattered Memories’. Combining haunting ambient melodies with soft rock tunes, Yamaoka has been praised for helping make the survival-horror series what it is today. He is also credited with having worked on the soundtracks to Gradius III & IV, Contra: Shattered Solider, and Rumble Roses.

One can only hope that this is just heavy rumor, as no official word from Konami has been released thus far, though this could be in an attempt to smooth things over. Speaking as a avid fan of the Silent Hill series, I can say with certainty that if these rumor do indeed prove true, then Konami has lost one of their pinnacle members, as well as the last remaining key of Team Silent. That is a truly devastating thing to think about for this little fan.
