GIJOE: Duke, Destro, Zartan and More

joecasting.jpg
Shooting begins next month and so now we have some of the final pieces in the puzzle of who will play the leads in GIJOE.
Irish actor David Murray has been cast as James McCullen Destro XXIV, primary villain. He’s largely known for stage work, but he’s been in a few movies too. The character Destro infamously wears a silver mask over his face, so its not known how much of Murray we’ll really see.Read more about Murray, and Destro.
Duke, the leader of GIJOE on the ground, will be played by Channing Tatum, an actor/model/dancer. I sure hope he’s tough on screen, because that photo I plucked for this story makes him look like a real sissy. Read up on Tatum and Duke.
Finally, Zartan, the master of disguise in COBRA, will be Arnold Vosloo, Vosloo is a South African best known as The Mummy from the film of the same name, also directed by GIJOE director Stephen Sommers. Read more about the actor here, and Zartan here.

Just to recap the cast so far: Dennis Quaid (Hawk), Sienna Miller (The Baroness), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), Rachel Nichols (Scarlett), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Heavy Duty), Said Taghmaoui (Breaker), Marlon Wayans (Ripcord), and Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow).

This isn’t the only casting I’m aware of right now. I know who is playing Cobra Commander, but its a major plot spoiler to even say who it is, so I’m putting it after the jump so only those who are serious about wanting to know see it. You’ve been warned.

Powet Toys: 25th Anniversary GI Joe!

The humor that was in and has been inspired by the original GI Joe animated series is probably what I love best about it. In this episode, I pay special tribute to a hero and a villain who made me laugh.

GI Joe Casting: Storm Shadow, Scarlett, Heavy Duty, Breaker

rachelnicholsscarlette.jpg
Paramount Pictures is confirming 4 new additions to the GI Joe movie cast according to IESB and Hollywood Reporter.

First up is Storm Shadow, the Cobra ninja and personal bodyguard to Cobra Commander. He’s the “swordbrother” of GI Joe’s resident ninja commando, Snake Eyes. He’ll be played by South Korean actor Byung-hun Lee. Western gamers might recognize him as the face of Wayne Holden in the game “Lost Planet: Extreme Condition

Model/Actress Rachel Nichols has been cast as the GI Joe member Scarlett (seen above). Scarlett is the team’s counter intelligence officer and uses a cross bow, she’s also been romantically linked to Snake Eyes. Rachel Nichols previously starred as an FBI agent on Alias, and has also taken an unspecified role in the next Star Trek. Nichols will dye her hair red and speak with a southern accent or else everyone will cry.

LOST fans looking for a shot of Mr Eko are going to be pleased to see Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has been cast as Heavy Duty, the unit’s demolition and ordinance specialist.

Boxer turned actor Said Taghmaoui has also been cast though the announcement makes no mention of his role. Fans speculate he’s taking the roll of Breaker, the communications expert.

GI Joe: Ray Park is Snake Eyes

snakeeyesdarthmaul.jpg
According to Slashfilm, Ray Park has been cast as the ninja commando Snake Eyes in GI Joe. Park is best known as Darth Maul from Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace. He was also Toad in the first X-Men film and the Stuntman behind the headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow.

So he’s very good at roles where he’ll become an action figure, and excels at having his face obscured. Park is also a 2nd degree black belt in Wushu and Shaolin Kung Fu.

Basically, he’s the perfect person to cast as the silent Snake Eyes. Can you think of anyone better?

Sienna Miller is Baroness for GI Joe

siennamillerbaroness.jpg
Just hours after I wondered aloud if the GI Joe movie would still happen soon with the writer’s strike on, Sienna Miller has become the first actress cast.

Miller is a British actress and will be playing fan-favorite character The Baroness. In addition to being Destro’s right hand lady, she’s a skilled spy and a master of disguise.

Filmingwith director Stephen Sommers will begin in February 2008 to make the August 7, 2009 release date. Miller will dye her hair black for the role or everyone will cry.

Read more at Variety. Thanks to Joey O for the tip.

GI Joe Videogame from EA?

eagijoe.jpg
This one is firmly in rumorville, but since the names are big, I’m going to pass it along.

EGM’s “Quarterman” column this month suggests EA will be announced as the publisher for the videogame companion to the big budget GI Joe movie.

With a writer’s strike on and the exact status of the Joes uncertain, the movie could well come out later than the intended summer 2009 release. This could be good news for a game, as the one thing holding back many license games is a rush to get the job done by the movie release date. Activision’s Transformers was a good game, but was about 2 months worth of adjustments and tuning away from a great game.

GI Joe has certainly been the subject of games before, with 2 pretty good NES titles and a fun coin-op entry as well. A next gen third person shooter with all the goofy joe vehicles, characters, and gadgets is just the thing we need to shake up the overly serious shooters. In fact, its high time I log on to Halo 3 and see if I can’t build some kind of Joes vs Cobras map…
