This was not terribly surprising and much of the speculation I saw on Twitter turned out to pretty much nail the announcement. The basic run down is Mattel did not receive the number of subscriptions they wanted to reach for the DC Universe Club Infinite Earths action figure subscription. When subscription ordering closed, Mattel stated they needed a couple weeks to figure out where to go from there.

Mattel announced the result of those internal discussions on Facebook today. The subscription will move forward. If you decide to purchase any figures on the day of the sale, those figures will be more expensive than you would have paid with the subscription. In addition, the subscription will open back up temporarily for people to order. More details on that are forthcoming. Finally, the fan choice subscription figure was also announced. That figure will be Metron in his Mobius Chair.

A reminder to anyone interested in any of the Mattel subscriptions on MattyCollector.com. Today is the very last day you can purchase any of the subs. All subscriptions ordered (even if at different times) will have their shipping combined.
This will be your last chance to participate in the following subs:
Club Eternia (Masters of the Universe)
Club Lion Force (Voltron)
Club Ecto (Ghostbusters)
Club Infinite Earths (DC Universe Classics)

Currently the Club Infinite Earths sub is sitting just under 60% of the needed number of subscribers for the line to launch. We will know by midnight whether we have seen the end of the DC Universe Classics line.

One of the surprise announcements out of SDCC 2011 for Mattel was the discontinuation of DC Universe’s distribution to retail in the form of connect n’ collect/build-a-figure waves. No more build-a-figures would be offered at retail and instead the line would shift to more popular character selections shipped on a unique schedule. That left a hole for MattyCollector.com to fill by selling the figures of characters the line had not yet gotten to along with the more obscure character selections that tend not to do well with retail, but are popular among collectors.

  

In theory, this wasn’t a bad idea. Mattel set up a 9 month subscription that would feature nine monthly figures starting in April of 2012. There would also be three quarterly oversized figures and one club exclusive oversized figure as well. The latter, of which, would be decided by online fan poll based on a selection of revealed characters including, but not limited to, Black Lantern Swamp Thing and Shaggy Man.

The linch pin of this subscription, though, was that a specific number of subscriptions would need to be sold to make it viable. Mattel setup a thermometer to keep track of the relative number of subscriptions on MattyCollector.com to give people an informed view of how close they were to the goal.

This was the big one for a lot of those following at home. Mattel had some big announcements to make including Ghostbusters, Voltron, DC Universe and most especially Masters of the Universe (MOTU). ActionFigurePics actually got video of the whole presentation (seen above). I will not attempt to summarize in neat bullet point form the contents of the panel after the jump. Mattel had a bunch of news of new products for its DC licensed line including DC Universe Classics, a new Young Justice line, the final year of Justice League Unlimited and a brand new Batman line.

Good news for Masters of the Universe (MOTU) Classics collectors. The latest issue of ToyFare revealed the May Club Eternia figure available exclusively on MattyCollector.com (until all the e-tailers buy them up and sell them for marked up prices). The May figure will be She-Ra’s nemesis Catra. Catra will have both a grey and a red mask to pay tribute to the vintage figure and the cartoon, respectively. Matty’s facebook page showed the rear view of the Catra figure, while you’ll need to pick up the latest ToyFare to see the full frontal (or click the picture on the right). Also announced in ToyFare is that the next DC Universe vs. MOTU Classics 2-pack will be Green Lantern and Zodac (classic white guy, not Zodak, the black guy from 200x sadly). In addition to all this great news, Matty’s facebook page also gave us the skinny on the upcoming release schedule including reissues. Looks like they are going to start doubling up on reissues. Good news for those catching up. Bad news for their wallets.

I know this news has been out for a while, but I’m trying to catch up on news I missed during the busy holiday/year end period. I’m not a big DCUC collector, but I have to admit, this is one tempting wave. From the facebook reveal:

Well the rumors this time are true! Wave 17 for DCUC is coming soon and it is our first step into the Blackest Night!

While we do have more Blackest Night concepts in the wings, this wave should help whet fans appetite for all the colored Lantern goodness!

Wave 17 will consist of Orange Lantern Luthor, Yellow Lantern Scarecrow, White Lantern Hal Jordan (with Black Lantern Variant), Violet Lantern Wonder Woman, Blue Lantern Flash and Indigo Lantern Atom. Together they will create a Collect and Connect modern Anti-Monitor!

And to answer the inevitable question, we did look into Red Lantern Mera. The only way to do her right is with a 100% tool and for that cost we can do 4 other figures. So while she did not make the cut this time around, we do know fans want complete sets and we are committed to one day getting her out there!
