SDCC 2010: MOTU Classics

Never one to disappoint with a display, Mattel had a huge statue of Prince Adam to show since he is this year’s exclusive ‘accessory’ to Orko. The big panel for MOTU is not until Saturday as far as I know. After the panel, I will update this post with any new information that will be revealed and there will be new information revealed.

Here’s what we know. Whiplash, Carnivus and Grizzlor are on display. There was a small somewhat blurry picture taken of a card that may or may not have accidentally been put out before anything was announced. It showed 6 characters names we have not previously seen on the slate for release with a release month for each. Those are as follows:
October – Roboto
November – Grizzlor
December – Buzz-Off
January – Bow
February – Vikor
March – King Hsss

Count me as super excited about Roboto and super perplexed by Vikor. Anyone know who he is? Post in the comments with links or info!
Bow is the male character from She-Ra that wasn’t a bad guy. Glad to see that some other series’ are still getting attention, but I’d like to see more.
Also on display was a very nice Silver She-Ra. Similar to the Spirit of King Grayskull figure, it is super limited to a total of two and one will be given away to a lucky attendee via a raffle for charity. On a lighter note, Mattel had some Moss Man deodorant. I’m not sure if that was a freebie or what it was aside from highly amusing.

Action Figure Pics had a very nice MOTU gallery here from Preview Night.
Michael Crawford had a nice gallery of closeups on the 3 upcoming displayed figures here.

Images of She-Ra and Deodorant are mirrored from ActionFigurePics.com.
Images of Carnivus, Gygor, Grizzlor and Whiplash are mirrored from Michael Crawford‘s site.

SDCC 2010: Transformers Panels come up short

The Transformers Panels have come and gone for the opening day of SDCC and we have nothing to really show for it.
There was very little discussion of toys. The War for Cybertron figures were shown briefly during discussion of the game. Some time was spent talking about the Powercore Combiners line, essentially reiterating that this line wasn’t replacing anything, only supplementing. They wanted to expand the world of combiners. When it came to talking about Generations, some of the new figures were shown including Hailstorm, Breacher, Seaspray, Terradive, Tomahawk and Highbrow. None of the showstopper reveals that happened at Botcon were shown here. No Jazz. No Thunderwing. No Scourge. No Windcharger. No Tracks. No Perceptor. No Grapple. No Lugnut. No Skullgrin. And what a lot of people were waiting for, No Kup.

Most of the discussion on both panels focused on Transformers: Prime. We got to see some new slides of what Ratchet, Arcee and Cliffjumper will look like (pictures after the jump). We also get our first look at the human characters. In addition, we were shown Decepticon troopers, which were described as being similar to Storm Troopers from Star Wars. No names. Just generic Decepticon bodies. Some avid fans may pick up on the fact that the Autobots had their own version of storm troopers in Transformers Animated in the form of AutoRoopers. Google that one, kids. Animated got that inspiration from another special place in Transformers history.

From what I can tell, it sounds like some very rough footage was shown as well, but there isn’t much on that. Frankly, it doesn’t feel like this show is as far along as they wanted it to be on the production side of things. They compensated for that at Botcon with lots of new toy reveals, but that was absent here.

[Update! – Crazy] IGN posted the teaser test footage from the panel! Added to top of post.

SDCC 2010: Marvel Legends Preview Night

Hasbro continues to show us that Marvel Legends are simply an after-thought now during preview night when they showed us the 3 2-packs we voted on last year. The winners of that poll were Black Widow, Valkyrie and Deadpool. Deadpool will be packaged with Warpath in his current X-Force. There will be a variant pack where Deadpool will be wearing his X-Men costume from Cable and Deadpool. The variant version of Warpath will feature his more traditional costume.

The second 2-pack is Black Widow with Winter Soldier. The variants have Black Widow in a grey outfit with shorter hair, while Winter Soldier has longer hair. The third pack is Valkyrie and yet another Hulk figure. No word if there is a variant pack for those two.

No other Marvel Legends were seen during Preview Night. I will be genuinely surprised and happy if more are revealed over the next few days. These figures should start showing up in October as Toys R Us exclusives

Maximum Letdown: Space Trader – Merchant Marine (PC, Mac OSx, IphoneOS, Linux)

spacetraderEven though it’s a bit immoral, I just love the drug dealing mechanic in GTA Chinatown Wars. It’s quite satisfying trying to make a dollar out of 15 cent by slanging dope. Now what if someone were to take that mechanic, make an entire game based around it, set it in space, make it into an FPS, and make it 200 percent more retarded? Well the end result would most likely be Space Trader – Merchant Marine, which is likely a remake of the old Palm Pilot OS game. I got this game as part of the Meridian 4 game collection that was only $24 during a Steam special (this special also included Shadowgrounds, Chains, and Larva Mortus). Although its economy-based gameplay premise shows promise, it’s bought down by too many flawed mechanics.

$20 Game of the Week: Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)

mgs4Hideo Kojima’s masterpiece is most likely the reason you bought a PS3, and for good reason. Like its predecessors, Metal Gear Solid 4 bends the rules of video game convention to become a landmark for its generation of gaming, and like its predecessors, it deserves a space on your shelf.

Bond 23 killed without license due to MGM debt

The 23rd film in the James Bond film franchise has been canned. MGM, one of the franchise’s backers from the start, is heavily in debt. Many are quick to point out that this will not be the end of the series featuring the covert british agent with a license to kill. It will only be a matter of time before another company picks up the rights. It appears that Spyglass Entertainment is most likely frontrunner to pick things up, with Summit Entertainment (those responsible for the Twilight films) not far behind. This 23rd installment was to star Daniel Craig returning to the role with Sam Mendes directing. It seems likely that both will be pursuing other opportunities very soon.

MGM’s debt has affected other films currently in limbo as well, most notably The Hobbit.
