Lost Classics: WWF Attitude (PS1, N64, Dreamcast)

701388-602369-games_cover-resized200.jpgWithout a doubt, we associate Acclaim with some of the worst games ever made. However, they’ve also had the longest run with the WWF licence. Up until the late 90s though, wrestling titles were only limited to a niche audience. All that changed with WWF Warzone. This title laid the foundation for wrestling games today as we know them. It included solid presentation, color commentary, and the one thing that’s pretty much a requirement in today’s wrestling games: create-a-wrestler. With this feature, it was possible to put yourself in the game, bring in a wrestler that was left out the cast, or even recreate a character from another wrestling organization. However, there were two major issues players had with the game, namely the small and out-of-date roster and lack of match types.  In an attempt to address these issues, (and perhaps spurred on by THQ’s WCW/NWO Revenge released later that year) Acclaim went back to work on WWF Attitude, which stands as one of the finest early wrestling games made at the time.

$20 Game of the Week: Def Jam – Fight for New York (Gamecube, PS2, Xbox)

md_def_jam_fight_for_ny.jpgIn late 2002, EA announced a 3-way partnership with developer Aki and hip hop label Def Jam.  The unlikely union resulted in 2003’s Def Jam Vendetta, a mix of wrestling and hip hop.  Although people were skeptical about the game at first, it became an instant hit when it was released.  However, a few things held it back from true greatness, mainly the lack of a create-a-character feature (something common place in most wrestling games) and the lack of play modes.  Enter Def Jam: FFNY which would rectify both of these situations.

Aaron Eckhart “To Face” Off Against Dark Knight

Aaron EckhartAaron Eckhart is either confirmed as – or in negotiations to play – Harvey Dent, better known as Two-Face, depending on your sources. All in all, it sounds like it’s pretty much a done deal.

I remember the first time I really recognized who Eckhart was – I was watching The Core, and I thought, hey, it’s that guy! Thank God that’s not the high point of his movie career. Thank You For Smoking was of course his most notable recent role, and I’m personally hoping that we get to see much more subtlety and depth to Harvey Dent than what we had to see in Batman Forever. Of course, in Tommy Lee Jones’s defense, I’m pretty sure the crappiness of that movie had nothing to do with him.

Tekken 6 Coming to Arcades

tk6_aou_08.jpgYou knew it was coming. Two new characters, Leo and Zafina are unveiled.

Namco proudly displayed the game for the first time at Japan’s AOU 2007 coin-op exhibition. Tekken Official has been updated with several screen shots and a short trailer.

Tekken 6 will undoubtedly land on the PS3 sometime after its arcade run, but with Virtua Fighter 5 jumping ship to Xbox 360, is is possible Namco will finally go multiplatform?

Cream of the Comics – 2/14/2007

GØDLAND #16GØDLAND #16
written by Joe Casey, art by Tom Scioli

Well, I definitely tried to pimp this book out before, but I don’t think anyone took any interest, as I also definitely screwed up the image-linking in that post, but no one minded.

BUT!

Tomorrow, to celebrate Valentine’s Day I presume, issue #16 is ONLY SIXTY CENTS!

And, considering the book is at Image rather than Marvel or DC, the creators have to give up more than just the bulk of their paycheck to put a book like that out. Think about what a labor of love and effort Casey and Scioli went through in making this so affordable. And if your local retailer doesn’t have one, just back-order it; it’ll still be the same price!

So seriously, take one for the team and cough up sixty cents already you damn cheapskate!
