MK vs. DC? More Than Just Rumor?

mkversusdc.jpgApparently not too long ago, some guy on the IGN boards started a rumor about a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics fighting game in the works, citing an “inside source” as his feed. People dismissed it as false, and moved on about their business.

Now it seems the rumor is getting more hype. TRMK.org, one of the more prominent and informed MK sites on the net, has a recent article that analyzes the rumor a bit more.

As incredulous as this rumor has sounded ever since it first made the rounds more than ten years ago, TRMK has confirmed from our own sources that the next Mortal Kombat game for the current generation of consoles – Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – will indeed be a “Versus” style game.

While we were unable to confirm the DC Comics angle proposed by the IGN Boards message, we do know that the game will feature another well-known established intellectual property. It seems unlikely that the DC Comics license will appear along side a franchise known for its gruesome fatalities; however, the MK Team did state that they were intent on “reinventing everything from the ground up” in order to “wipe the slate clean”. Therefore, the idea that the game will not feature fatalities in the traditional Mortal Kombat style is not as far fetched as it initially sounds.

The original rumor on the IGN boards had been picked up by a user of MKOnline forums, which enticed the guys of TRMK.org to do their own digging, and it seems they got a little more than just hearsay. It seems everyone from the staff of the fansites to the fans themselves are skeptical, and with good reason. Mortal Kombat became famous for it’s gruesome Fatalities and gobs of bloodshed and violence, and has not deviated from that road since it’s conception. With DC, despite being darker, leaning more towards the anti-violence side of things, it just seem farfetched to believe this 100%.

Not alot of DC fans would be too keen on seeing Batman having his spine ripped out, or Green Lantern having his head eaten off. On the other side, MK fans would not want to see Scorpion *not* impaling someone with his spear, or Sub-Zero *not* freezing his enemy and smashing them to bits. But, I guess we’ll see.

Cliver Barker’s “Jericho” Demo Released

Cliver Barker's JerichoFileplanet has taken it upon themselves to offer up the demo release for Clive Barker’s survival horror game, Jericho. The actual game itself won’t release until November 2nd, but at least those of us who have been eying this little gem will get a taste of the gameplay.

For those who aren’t familiar with the title, the game takes place in an apocalyptic setting that seems to be a hybrid of Silent Hill and Gears of War. Your a member of the Jericho Squad, that’s been sent to cull the uprising of the “Firstborn” – grotesque and twisted creatures from the Abyss who were banished from earth by God after he feared his creations. The members of Jericho Squad are sent in with heavy artillery, as well as each one packing their own special supernatural talent, making freak killing that much more fun.

If it’s Clive Barker, is has to be good.

Halo 3 Manual Online

Halo 3 ArtYes, a few weeks ago we posted some stuff from the manual. And yes, on September 13th, Powet was shut down for a period of 20 hours for not removing the material at Microsoft’s request.

Now, as if to rub it in our faces, Microsoft has posted the entire book, using this new Silverlight app, which I’m installing and will probably never use again.

So here you go. Halo 3 Manual. Thanks for enforcing that DMCA stuff, Microsoft.

13 hours until I can play this game…

$20 Game of the Week/Lost Classics: Gradius (NES, SNES, Game Boy, Arcade, Playstation 1, Playstation 2, PSP)

gradius.jpgIn less than 48 hours, one of the greatest first person shooter franchises will make its return. So what better time than the present to take a look at one of the other types of shooters? Before FPS games, 2-d side scrollers (and their cousins the vertical scrolling shooters) ruled over gaming. They came at a dime a dozen, but three series stood out amongst the rest: Darius, R-Type, and Konami’s Gradius. Gradius had some awesome levels, cool music, challenging gameplay, and a unique power-up system. There have been several classic entries in the series, including the spin-off series Parodius, and the two-play cooperative Life Force/Salamander. Lets take a look at this classic series, becuase its as gamers, it’s imperative that we don’t forget where we came from, particularly in this age of Unreal Engine 3 graphics, Havok Physics, and Emotion engines.

TGS 2007: Miyamoto Taisho

TGS 2007 Logo

Even though Nintendo had no official presence at Tokyo Game Show, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto made a surprise appearance, stealing the show on the first day open to the public. 4cr and Powet.TV were there, which means you get to be too! Virtually, anyway.

Transformers 2 Scheduled for 2009

Optimus Prime ready for action
The Los Angeles Times is reporting on the comings and goings of Hollywood moguls Stephen Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen with their company Dreamworks SKG and dropped this nugget of info:

Even if he leaves, Spielberg will remain the crown jewel of the acquisition [of Dreamworks by Viacom] for many years. He and director Michael Bay have signed on to make “Transformers 2,” scheduled to hit theaters in the summer of 2009.

Bay has been iffy on whether there’s time to make the movie before the strike, and producer Don Murphy has flatly stated as much.
Strike or not, they all want to see the Autobots back, and so this movie will get made. If there’s no strike in June 2008, you can expect Transformers in 2009.

TGS 2007: SNK Breaking News

Vinnk came running up to me after talking with SNK staff about one of their upcoming Wii games. It made me excited, and I didn’t even know what he was talking about! So I made him repeat again for the camera.

Not unlike Halo or Mario, I’ll eat up any scrap of news about a new Soul Calibur game. Here’s some more video, with lots of footage in engine.
