Resident Evil 15th Anniversary

On March 22nd 1996, Capcom released the game titled “Biohazard” to Japanese audiences, and started a franchise that has spanned 15 years. Re-titled “Resident Evil” in the United States due to copyright constraints, the series that came to be known as one of the staples of survival-horror gaming has produced over as many games as years it’s been alive, with 2 more on the way.

One of them, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, was a game we were able to take a look at at PAX East.

Check out what has gone on in this series that has spanned a decade and a half after the cut!

Marvel vs Capcom 3 minimates on display at C2E2

Tomopop was on location at C2E2 this past weekend and got some nice shots of upcoming minimates based on the Marvel vs Capcom 3 game. Included in some of the images were Deadpool, Super Skrull, Dormammu, C. Viper, Morrigan and more. I did not see any accompanying information regarding release or assortment pack outs for the figures. Design sheets for these new figures leaked just before Valentine’s Day. Those can be seen here. It looks like many of the Marvel characters will be leveraging existing tooling, while most of the Capcom characters are getting the full treatment including Amaterasu!

Images of Voltron Force Lions

The Geek News blog over at MTV posted some of the first images of the lions from the new Voltron Force cartoon coming to NickToons later this year. No Yellow Lion to be seen, unfortunately, but all the rest are here. We’ve seen some of these images before in various forms of completeness as teasers on the VoltronOfficial twitter feed. Its nice to see them completed and colored though. Things are definitely shaping up for the series so far.

Venture Bros. renewed for Season 5 and Season 6 with special

Jackson Publick, one of the show-runners for the Venture Bros., has posted on his blog news that the Venture Bros. show has renewed its contract with Adult Swim for two more seasons, in addition to a special 60 to 90 minute special.

We’ve recently signed a new contract with adultswim to produce two more seasons of The Venture Bros.

Doc and I officially started writing last week. Though, in truth, we technically started writing season 5 last year when we accidentally brainstormed a handful of (we think) pretty hot new stories while we were writing the season 4 finale. Our goal is to have enough scripts to comfortably begin pre-production by June.

But wait…that’s not all!

Our contract also includes a long-form (60-90 min.) Venture Bros. special. Don’t ask me when we’ll make it, what it’s going to be about, or whether it’ll be on TV or direct-to-DVD, because we don’t have a clue yet. Nevertheless: good news!

Tell them what else they get, Jackson…

We’ve been secretly working on an 11 minute Venture Bros. special for the past couple of months. A sort of light-hearted, one-off little aperitif we’re producing and animating entirely in-house at Titmouse Studios in NY and LA. It will premiere some time this summer.

We’ve been left in limbo for quite some time over the fate of the show, so its great to hear this news. The Powet staff are big fans and look forward to the continuation of this series.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Is (not) The Holiday Killer in Dark Knight Rises

update: this story is false.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (and the rest of the cast of Inception) has been heavily favored to join the cast of Christopher Nolan’s next Batman movie. Now with Tom Hardy in place as Bane and Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, JGL will join the cast as Alberto Falcone.

You may recall Carmine Falcone was played by Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins, and his empire was shattered by Batman and Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight. Alberto Falcone is his son in the Batman fiction, and may be entering the story to reclaim the family business.

However, Nolan has borrowed from The Long Halloween before, and its likely that Alberto won’t just be another mob boss but will instead be The Holiday Killer. Holiday was a serial killer whose first murder occurred on Halloween, (then Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc) and continued until the following Halloween with the murder of Carmine Falcone.

As of The Dark Knight, Carmine is still being held in Arkham, after a dose of Scarecrow’s psychotic drugs. Its unknown how this might fit in with Bane or the possibility of Catwoman, but both of those characters are tied heavily to Gotham’s organized crime.

As casting news begins to slow down and filming not to far off, the full story is still hard to decipher. The Dark Knight had twists audiences didn’t expect that didn’t come from set reports and no script was leaked in advance. If The Dark Knight Rises can continue this momentum and use the wealth of characters to give the story life and depth rather than crowd it, we might have the first super hero movie series with a good third act.

Potential Maximum Letdown: Fire Pro Wrestling (Xbox 360)

Normally, I don’t do Maximum Letdowns (or for that matter $20 GOTWs and Lost Classics) on games that haven’t been released yet, and since I don’t normally purchase bad games just to smash on them, I concentrate on older titles (along with the occasional dud I find as a download). However in this case, I think the premature bashing is more than warranted, as one of my all-time favorite gaming franchises has been ruined.

Ever since it’s origin on the Japanese PC Engine, the Fire Pro Wrestling series has been notable for its huge list of wrestlers (many of which are based on real-life personalities), huge amount of customization options (allowing players to customize everything from wrestlers, to match types, to ring logos), and its realistic (well as realistic one can get for a scripted sport) simulation-like quality. Not anymore. Thanks to Microsoft, the Fire Pro Wrestling franchise is going to become less than a shadow of its former self, and the upcoming iteration will be a complete mockery of the wrestling franchise I once loved.

$20 Game of the Week: Galcon Fusion (PC, Mac)

Galcon Fusion, created by developer Phil Hassey, is the latest in the Galcon series, a series of games that started as a 1987 PC shareware title and has been remade as a browser game, Iphone app, and a desktop game. Short for Galactic Conquest, Galcon Fusion can best be described as an arcade-style real time strategy game. The object of the game is to use your fleet of ships to colonize other planets in the galaxy while watching out for other players. By capturing planets, you enable them to create more ships, which you then direct at other planets in an attempt to conquer teh galaxy as fast as possible. It’s simple to get into, yet like most casual games, it gets addictive. There are several different modes, including online multiplayer, and you can post your high score to the game’s leaderboards. It’s available on steam, and it’s cheap, so check it out.
