“Beastly, I gotta have more cowbell!”

Care Bears Welcome to Care-a-Lot - Beastly banging on a cowbell

The new Care Bears show “Welcome to Care-a-Lot” has been airing on The Hub since the begining of the month. Though the show does not seem to have attracted an adult audience like the Hub’s other show My Little Pony has, it’s nice to see that they’re still making an effort to include completely obscure references that would be completely lost on the target demographic. In last week’s episode “Show of Shyness” the human of the week Phoebe is performing in a concert with the “shady” Beastly on drums. Harmony encourages him by saying “Beastly, I gotta have more cowbell!”. This would be reference to the iconic Saturday night live skit in which Christopher Walken encourages Blue Öyster Cult to include “More cowbell” in “Don’t Fear The Reaper”. Check out a short clip of the scene:

The full episode is currently on the Hub’s web site, though it won’t remain online for long as it will likely be replaced with the latest episode later this week. The quote in question occurs in the 20th minute of the episode.

Yet Another Trailer For ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

I might have said the previous one was the “final trailer” but this is the real final trailer. I guess? Its weirdly uploaded to the youtube page for Finnish mobile phone company Nokia. Not a spoiler: no Nokia phones in this trailer.

It is almost entirely music, lots of action, lots of little snips not seen in previous trailers, and at least two line deliveries that set a dire tone.

Nothing about the promotional materials for the last Batman outing made things look this dire actually. I guess since they know this is the last one they want to make it as SERIOUS AS POSSIBLE. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman thankfully lighten the mood whenever they’re on screen.

Notably absent from all trailers and marketing: Marion Cotillard.

Ninja Turtles film pre-production shut down by studio, release date delayed

According to the Hollywood Reporter, pre-production has been shut down on the Ninja Turtles movie reboot. Staff involved with pre-production have been temporarily let go. The movie, itself, has not been cancelled, but has been moved out from December 2013 to a May 2014 release. A weak script is said to be the problem.

Considering the fan outcry that resulted when the revelation surfaced the Turtles would be aliens in this film, I cannot make myself seem surprised by this. It should be stressed that this has nothing to do with that fan outcry, but working with such a foreign concept to such an established brand could not come without it’s own challenges. Not to mention the stigma associated with Michael Bay and reboots, as his company, Platinum Dunes, is set to be producing the film.

This is the third film Paramount has delayed for various reasons. GI Joe: Retaliation and World War Z were both recently pushed out. The TMNT franchise was acquired by Nickelodeon in October of 2009. Nickelodeon and Paramount are both subsidiaries of giant media umbrella corporation, Viacom. The film was set to reinvigorate Nickelodeon after poor recent ratings. All parties involved still hope to accomplish that in May 2014.

The Powet Top 5 – Pokémon

Welcome to the Powet Top 5, where we explore the top (and bottom) 5 items we think are relevant to any of a variety of topics that span the imagination. Sit back, read, and respond.

Top 5 favourite Pokémon who's that Pokémon - Jigglypuff, Psyduck, Magikarp and Caterpie

Pokemon! There are over 150, as the Pokérap tells us. It’s been a long time since that original set over 15 years ago. These days there are 648. Here I find myself tasked with distilling this list down to 5. Naturally with such a huge sample, everyone will have their preference. Narrowing it down a team of 6 is hard enough! If I wanted to be fair I could pick a Pokémon from each generation and fill out the list, but I’m hardly fair. I’m a biased human who remembers the best of times from my day and resents all this new stuff, so as far as my list is concerned there might as well be 150! Despite my love of the games and all the time I put into them over the years it seems my choices are highly influenced by what I saw in the anime, which was a great show up until Tracey showed up and then it was lame. With that, here are my Top 5 Pokémon. Feel free to share your own.

$20 Game of the Week: Mount and Blade – Warband (PC)

The Mount and Blade series is a different kind of medieval RPG. Note that I said medieval as opposed to fantasy, because unlike games like Skryim and Dragon Age, there aren’t any dragons, wizards, magic, or demons. It’s just you, your army, and thousands of miles of a land torn in strife. Turkish developer TaleWords has developed a true sandbox style game, as you are free to approach it anyway you wish without the experience being structured by a plot. You can gather an army, purchase land for business development, participate in large-scale combat, and even marry into royalty. Warband is the standalone expansion to the original Mount and Blade, meaning that you don’t have to own the original in order to enjoy everything Warband has to offer. Warband improves on the original game with numerous additions, the most significant of which being multiplayer.

Maximum Letdown: Fantastic Four (Playstation 1)

While the Fantastic Four may not be as cool as Spider-Man, as epic as the Avengers, or as badass as the X-men, but if you’re a fan or Marvel Comics, you should be familiar with them, ans for good reason: they are Marvel’s first superhero team since The Golden Era of Comics. They are well known enough to spawn a slew of spin-off comics, three animates cartoons, three movies (though one was unreleased), and a series of video games. Two of them are of course, based on the movies. Those weren’t very well received, but compared to this Acclaim Playstation clunker, they are like BioShock and Mass Effect.
