PSP Redux?

psp.jpgAccording to a post on Ain’t It Cool News of all places, Sony may try to take the fight harder to the DS and other non-gaming devices by releasing a slimmer, high capacity, more functional PSP by Winter 06.
Here’s the relevant quote from the post:

Seems Sony’s current internal plans call for a release of a refitted PSP around Christmas this year. The device will, indeed, be streamlined (thinner), lighter, boast 4 gigs of memory and a camera. Proteus indicated Sony is having a hell of a time with PlayStation 3 on several fronts (between PS3’s Cell processor and its built-in Blu-ray DVD, cost effectiveness has pretty much gone out the window). Seems the ever-phantasmic PS3 may well be delayed until next year, with Sony’s reworked PSP being positioned as a lead-in to its release (in the same way Nintendo’s release of the oh-so-sexy DS Lite heralds the coming of Revolution).

Better PSP revealed at E3 could be just the sort of distraction Sony needs if the PS3 delay ends up being until 07. Its cold comfort, but if Sony does in fact rededicate efforts toward the PSP hardware maybe more software will follow.

Super Princess Peach review

Super Princess Peach Box ArtTake a classic style Super Mario Bros. game, switch Mario with Peach and what do you get? Super Princess Peach.

In a terribly obvious role reversal we see Mario get kidnapped (by a goomba of all things) and Peach now tasked with the role of saving him. Pretty basic concept that one would expect to produce an inferior style title. But no! This game is solid. It really does play just like a an old school Mario Bros. game. This game is what I was hoping New Mario Bros. would turn out to be like. So why are all the fanboys out there drooling over New Mario Bros. without giving this one a shot? … maybe they just don’t want to look gay like some guys who always choose Peach in Super Mario Bros. 2? I bet they don’t have such reservations about playing Metroid!
So basically you’ve got peach walking around in a world which looks kind of like Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and a bit of Yoshi’s Island tossed into it without having that ugly looks like it was drawn with crayon style Yoshi’s Island had. She doesn’t use standard power ups but instead uses her emotions to fly, cry on enemies, burn things or heal. You can also purchase power ups with the coins you collect in levels to do things like tricks with your super parasol to get through levels. The object of the game is to rescue 3 hidden Toads in each stage and then fight a boss at the end of each world. This plays out pretty well because, through the use of your special abilities, there’s quite a variety of ways in which the Toads can be hidden. While the game starts out as being quite simple it picks up in difficulty soon enough. While not a terribly difficult game the maze like levels do offer a challenge reminiscent of later levels in Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World. The bosses all require little tricks to beat in the style of a Yoshi’s Island or Super Mario Sunshine boss. This keeps things interesting.

Simply put I recommend this game to anyone with an appreciation for side scrolling Mario games who wants to try something new.

Now check out the official site which has tons more content then your average game’s official site. And it’s just bizarre stuff like t-shirt designs and a little app to make a fake magazine. Nintendo.com also has a nice page for the game put together.

Throwback Thursday: Capcom VS SNK

While Capcom fighters have always been easier to find (with many Street Fighter releases going back to the SNES), SNK titles tended to be every bit as good and sometimes better. Naturally, these 2 companies had to pit their characters against each other sooner or later, and the results are a mixed bag.
Dragonsama of the Penny-arcade forum offers a history and tribute of these games, going from the silly chibi card battles on the Neo-Geo pocket, to the graphical delight of CVS2, and ending finally with the last game ever on the Neo-Geo MVS.

Sonic X-Treme goes for $2500

In what may be the single highest winning bid for the rarest game in existance, the unreleased, unfinished, virtually unplayable, Sega Saturn game Sonic X-Treme has been sold. Via a middleman from a Sega employee who wishes to remain anonymous, its claimed this is the only copy of the game outside of Sega’s offices, and that he personally destroyed all the others.
You can read all about this lost Sonic game at Lost Levels, and view the terms of the auction here

New Super Mario Brothers

Saw some scans of New Super Mario Bros from 4chan’s video game board, so I “borrowed” the pictures…

The game looks awesome as hell and I can’t wait to play a new Mario game that wasnt made by a fan.

NoBrandCon April 21-23

Eau Claire, WI will once again play host to No Brand Con, but something cool this time around is the expanded focus on gaming. Attendees are encouraged to bring their DS, theres multiple game rooms this time, and they’ve snagged Vinnk from 4 Color Rebellion as a guest with a 4CR meetup scheduled. I’d suggest a powet.tv meet-up as well, but I already know a bunch of people going, so we’ll all just hang out like one big geek family.

DS Lite Launch

DSCF4138.JPGKotaku’s surreal coverage of the DS Lite launch must be read to be beleived.  Frankly, if you’re going to have to get up that early and wait in line, it might as well be with some down-to-earth weirdos you can alternately converse with and examine with zoo-like fascination.

Only launch I ever attended was the US Dreamcast.  Only 2 of us there, but we still had a good time.

Superman Returns from EA

Superman PosterElectronic Arts has posted the gorgeous trailer for Superman Returns on Xbox 360. In light of the lack of a new trailer for the movie and the fact that the game features a giant boss fight with Metallo, this is pretty cool.
