Hi-Def Nintendo DS a Tentative

Because having 2 variations on the original Nintendo DS handheld system wasn’t enough, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has announced a new DS varient that will sport high-definition visuals, as well as motion-sensoring. Squinting at your DS screen will now be a thing of the past.

No official release date has been mentioned, so we could be waiting a while. Given the sales of the DS in North America, as well as how popular motion-sensors in things like iPhones and Nintendo’s own Wii console, you’d hope they’d be pushing for a release sooner rather than later.

Powet Alphabet: A is for Agent X

agent-x_largeSince the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

Yes, we’re starting off this round of the Powet Alphabet with a little twist. This could have been an A article of an X article depending on how you look at it, but why would we want to deprive you all of the wonder and awesomeness that is Agent X? We wouldn’t, that’s why.

So if you’re a comic book geek, like I’m sure a majority of you are, you might know a little character known in the Marvel Comic universe as Deadpool. The self-styled “Merc with a Mouth” has been a fan favorite of comic books for some time, with his kooky-badass style and insane ramblings whist feeding people their innards. It’s hard not to like a character with that kind of bizarre appeal. Marvel comics saw the wonderful reception the character was receiving, and figured “Why not have more characters like Deadpool?” That’s where the tale of Agent X begins.

Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 Preview Trailer

Debuted at the Spike Video Game Awards last night, we get our first glimpse at the sequel to one of the greatest games of 2009. Amongst the beautifully decrepit scenery we were shown from the first game, it also looks like Mark Hamil is reprising his role as the Joker. (I’d know that laugh anywhere)

Check out the chaos!

Powet Alphabet – W is for Women in Gaming

girlgaming_symbolSince the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

Since the dawn of time, there have been gender roles in the society of mankind. I could go into a huge explanation of this basis, but if you took any history lesson in your life, you already know the basics. In short, there have always been things that have been either strictly for guys, or strictly for girls. For the longest time there were these gender roles with very little overlap. Video games were, and have been, one such area.

Happy Birthday Playstation!

250px-PlayStationConsole_bkg-transparentJust wanted to give a quick shout-out to the original Playstation for reaching its 15th anniversary! 15 years ago today, the Playstation became the first retail-hit of the 32-bit 5th generation of gaming consoles, and the first on Sony’s Playstation family.

While not the first actual 32-bit console, as the Sega Saturn came only slightly ahead of it, the Playstation sported Sony’s hefty might behind it, along with a solid advertising and a slew of wonderful games. This trounced it’s early competition, and wouldn’t gain a true rival until the Nintendo 64 the following year, though the N64’s sales would still pale in comparison. This firm grasp of the gaming market rolled over with the Playstation 2’s widely-successful release a few years later.

So blow out your candles, Playstation. Consider yourself a middle-aged console!

Akira Yamaoka Jumps Konami Ship?

akira_yamaokaAccording to gaming site Aeropause, and followed up on Resident Evil/Silent Hill fansite The Horror is Alive, word has it that long-time Konami composer Akira Yamaoka has left the big-name game publisher after 16 years of dedicated duty.

Yamaoka is most well known for his work done for the Silent Hill series of games, having almost single-handedly worked on everything from the first game right up to the yet-released re-make ‘Shattered Memories’. Combining haunting ambient melodies with soft rock tunes, Yamaoka has been praised for helping make the survival-horror series what it is today. He is also credited with having worked on the soundtracks to Gradius III & IV, Contra: Shattered Solider, and Rumble Roses.

One can only hope that this is just heavy rumor, as no official word from Konami has been released thus far, though this could be in an attempt to smooth things over. Speaking as a avid fan of the Silent Hill series, I can say with certainty that if these rumor do indeed prove true, then Konami has lost one of their pinnacle members, as well as the last remaining key of Team Silent. That is a truly devastating thing to think about for this little fan.

Powet Alphabet: V is for Voltron

voltronSince the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

Nope, we’re not trying to put a crazy spin on “V for Vendetta” involving robot lions. It’s time for some more Powet Alphabet where we’re featuring the letter V for Voltron.

We all remember the great robot anime of the 1980’s. The original Gundam had been premiered, along with Robotech, and became legendary as the pioneers of what was much later dubbed the “Mecha” prime years. Voltron was the third component in these top-tiered series in terms of popularity and fanbase.
