SDCC 2011: The Dark Knight Returns And Other DC Animation

Following a screening of Batman: Year One, WB animation producer Bruce Timm announced to the audience their next movie projects.
The next feature will be Justice League Doom, an adaptation of Tower of Babel. Following that will be Superman vs. The Elite, and then the long await The Dark Knight Returns.

The Dark Knight Returns will be Warner Premier’s first two part feature, and Timm said the movie will be very faithful to the original. No voice cast has been announced by Andrea Romano said she is interested in bringing long time Batman actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hammill on board. We first reported TDKR would be a future project in April.

Timm was also asked about Kingdom Come as a possible project, but said that the style of the artwork does not lend itself to 2D animation. The Killing Joke remains a possibility for the future.

SDCC 2011: Lost “LOST” clip of Jacob and Man In Black

San Diego ComiCon is full of surprises. Con-favorite show LOST always had a huge panel with exclusive clips shown every year. The show ended last May, but for some reason, there is still another clip for this year.

Watch above as a moment from the first season plays out with Jacob and his brother, the Man In Black, looking on to discuss the castaways ultimate fate. Its directed by series regular Jack Bender with Mark Pellegrino and Titus Welliver reprising their roles.

This clip was presented at SDCC by Executive Producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, who did hold a “One Year Later” panel. Hit fix has a full description of their comments and answers to fans.

SDCC 2011: Halo Anniversary “Silent Cartographer” Demo Video

The original Halo is a memorable game for a variety of reasons, but perhaps the best example of the game and the best introduction one could be given to the universe is the level “The Silent Cartographer.”

Master Chief John 117 and a crew of marines are dropped on to a beach with a wide variety of Covenant enemies at the ready. This level also features the music commonly thought of as the “Halo Theme”

The demo shows a talked about feature: Classic mode. Tapping the “back” button on your Xbox controller will swap the new graphics for the original 2001 graphics. Honestly, I think the game looks pretty good either way, and the classic mode really does more to show off what they could accomplish with new textures and a few layers added on to the old engine.

This demo is what was originally shown behind closed doors at E3 last month, but is being shown to everyone at San Diego ComiCon.

If you Pre-Order Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, you’ll get a bonus in game, the “Grunt Funeral Skull.” What does it do? Well, here is a video…. [Read the rest of this entry…]

Watch 15 Minutes of Bioshock Infinite NOW.

Because it bears repeating: Bioshock is one of the best games of this, or any, generation. Its available on PS3, XBox 360, PC, or Mac. If you haven’t played it, you simply must.

Irrational Games gave us a tiny slice of Bioshock Infinite, their follow up to the original, at E3 last month. Behind closed doors, they showed invited guests more than the 90 second teaser, but 15 minutes of gameplay. Showcasing not only the action (which is crazy!) but the characters of the game (who are interesting!). New powers are expected, but this scene truly shows how special Elizabeth is. Also, the ‘big daddy’ of this game is called the Song Bird and he’s pretty awesome looking.

If this early look is willing to spill this much of the game out in front of us, I think we can expect a lot of surprises in the final release, due in 2012.

Portal 2 Music Video “Want You Gone”

It is almost impossible to believe a fan made this. Its not an official Valve video. Don’t be shocked if they hire him. It has got humor and great animation inspired by the game.

Obviously, as this is the end credits song from the game, the above video may include story spoilers for those who have not completed the Portal 2.

‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’ Trailer

You might ask why a geek news site is interested in such a mainstream action movie that doesn’t come out for another 5 months. Well, I will give you THREE reasons:
#1 – Produced by JJ Abrams, who along with Mission Impossible 3 is also responsible for LOST, Alias, Star Trek 2009, and this summer’s Super 8.
#2 – Tom Cruise co-stars with a slew of geek favorites: Simon Pegg (Shaun Of The Dead), Jeremy Renner (The Avengers‘ Hawkeye) and Josh Holloway (Sawyer from LOST).
#3 – This is a big one: Its the first live action movie directed by Brad Bird. He’s the screenwriter for the cult classic *batteries not included and a veteran animation writer and director with credits on The Simpsons, but he’s also responsible for 3 of the best animated movies of the past decade: The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille.
Bird took the gig directing Mission Impossible because Disney/Pixar delayed production of his intended next film, 1906, which would be Pixar’s first live action movie, about the 1906 earthquake the nearly destroyed San Fransisco. If Mission Impossible exceeds expectations, that movie will likely shuffle into production quicker.
