Famicom Dojo Podcast: To E3 or Not to E3 (2013)

E3 is over, but did anything of substance happen aside from Sony stabbing Microsoft in the side and twisting the knife? Everything of substance occurred before or after E3, including Microsoft’s “Xbox 180” announcement about its disc DRM and “always on” connectivity. In this digital world, has E3 outlived its usefulness as a press-only event? Sean and Vinnk unpack the reasons why Microsoft reversed course, and struggle with which next-gen console to get to compliment the Wii U. And Sean finally realizes that maybe he shouldn’t have passed over the PS3 last generation.

I watch E3 for sony announcements but non of it really wow me. Nintendo on the other hand Wowed the hell out of me. I knew X, Bayonetta 2, mario kart, and smash bros. was coming but omg they went far and beyond what i expected. It sucks that there wasn’t a lot more focus on the non big 3 games. like Indie and PC games.

uhh… Indie games don’t really get to E3. It costs a fortune to set up a booth there.
And you saw plenty of PC games from EA, Ubisoft, etc. PC ports of the same games you saw featured for consoles.

I’ll just say this,disappointed with nintendo and impressed with sony at this past E3.

I feel the same way. I mean I will probably love Nintendo’s new games but it was just so anti-climactic. I want surprises!

Yeah what nintendo showed was mostly first party titles.It’s not like i wasn’t expecting more sequels,but id figure they would play it safe.I wanted to see more new IP’s and sure there was X and Bayonetta 2 but that’s it.

I’ll say the same thing I said on the message boards. I was very impressed with Microsoft’s showing at e3. In fact, out of all 3 console manufacturers, I would say they had the best showing. They promised us games, new franchises, and exclusives, and they delivered. I’m hyped for the new Killer Instince, and I’m intrigued with Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break. Yeah they got ‘pwned’ on the DRM and used games thing, but to be honest I wasn’t bothered by either of those to begin with and they reversed their stance on them anyhow. The biggest mistake they made in regards to that is not explaining them quickly as well as their rationale, ie how the system would benefit from it. On a final note, you see how they revealed Halo like it was some big secret? Bro please. We knew Halo was coming, we just wondered what took them so long to get to it. Although that vid made me curious about teh direction of the next game.

Sony had a good showing as well, but most of what they showed was either things we already knew about or things that were multiplatform, same with EA and Square Enix. Although I was surprised by FFV, KH3, and Frostbite-powered Battlefront 3. I’m kinda disappointed there wasn’t more shown for the VIta. That system has potential, but it’s struggling

Nintendo is playing it safe, and that’s a bad thing to do with dwindling third party support. The system will be hurting from no new EA and 2K games titles. It hurts especially because sports titles on the Wii U would benefit from the gamepad. Nintendo needs to come out with something new soon.

While fanboys will argue endlessly about which system ‘pwned’, the only real loser will be my wallet throughout the next few months.

In my opinion this was a pretty good E3 sony killed it, lots of games to be excited about. Is this the last year that E3 is relevant? Yes because E3 is really only important during console launches and this is probably the last console generation.
