Go figure – the first $20GOTW of the New Year (even if I am a bit late) just so happens to be the first 3DS game (that’s not available as a download), and it’s the first Nintendo 3DS launch title that’s not a port or remake, and is actually worth buying, and it’s the first Ghost Recon on a portable system (rather than cell phone platforms such as NGage). If there is one video game icon who got to celebrate his birthday this year, it’s Link. Legenda of Zelda turned 25 this year, and not only do we get a 3DS remake of one of his greatest adventures (Ocarina of Time), a new Wii game (Skyward Sword), but we get a free version of Link’s first multiplayer outing, Four Swords. Originally an add-on to the Game Boy Advance remake of A Link In To The Past, Four Swords became a surprise hit among fans and critics alike. It is only available until February 20 of next year, so if you have a DSI, DSIXL, or 3DS, hurry up and download it.

While the 3DS was cleaning up at Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced that the PS Vita would be region-free — unlike its Nintendo competitor. The war is heating up! Who will win the holiday season this year? Will it be enough to turn things around for Sony?
