White And Nerdy

Weird Al’s latest is a knock on the Chamillionaire hit “Ridin Dirty” and pretty much covers the entire list of geek culture cliches.

I gotta point out how highly derivitive of “All About The Pentiums” the song itself is, but this is probably the biggest Al hit in years, so I’ll let him slide.

Thanks Logan!

Gaming Archaeology: Totaka’s Song

Quirky Nintendo music composer Kazumi Totaka has a 19-note tune that he likes to hide in his games. Have you heard it? Do you know how pervasive it is? Is it still hiding in yet-to-be discovered places? [Read the rest of this entry…]

Idlewild by Outkast

948702930_l.jpgOutkast’s long awaited movie and new album are less than a week away. Hip Hop’s most celebrated duo are releasing the new album to stores on August 22, but they’re currently playing the record in its entirety at myspace.com/outkast.

The movie, and its soundtrack album, are set in prohibition era south, where a speakeasy owner and his piano player (Big Boi and Andre 3000) have to overcome not only the illegality of alcohol for their club but also a gangster (Terrence Howard) who will take everything they’ve got. The setting makes Outkasts already weird and unique sound even more out there, putting the sounds of the day (jazz, swing, and blues) into modern hiphop and synth pop.

You can see the trailer at the official Idlewild movie page.

Metal By Numbers

COOKIE COOKIE COOKIE

Comic Brian Posehn formed a metal band for a track on his new album. It pretty successfully lampoons metal song and video conventions, even throwing in references that only real metal fans would get. Scott Ian of Anthrax is on guitar, and Brian’s real life wife and dogs are even in the video. Look for another Mr. Show vet in a cameo.

Land Of Confusion

Confession: I like Phil Collins and Genesis. They did some pretty cool shit back in the 80s and 70s before they evolved into adult contemporary band in the 90s and disbanded.

One of their best songs was the politically themed “Land Of Confusion” and this morning I heard the new single by Disturbed, which is a cover of this song.

While I love the Cold War symbolism in the original, its resonates today. The vision for the song is assisted in both cases by the music video, where Genesis and political figures of the day are presented as puppets resembling political cartoons. The Disturbed update is directed by Todd MacFarlane, and bears a stylistic similarity to a previous video he’s done, but its much more confrontational with its message, calling out the war mongering and greed of many nations far more directly.

Presented for your enjoyment, the original Genesis video and Disturbed version, after the jump.

Review: “Why Try Harder?” The Best of Fatboy Slim

whytryharder.jpgFatboy Slim survived the late 90s fascination with techno by creating a big beat sound that… well crap I don’t know how he survived, but it was long enough to compile a greatest hits record.

The opening salvo of “Rockafeller Skank” lets you know pretty much exactly what you’re in for. Fast, fun dance music bouncing along with a refrain repeated to the point that you can sing along by 30 seconds into the cut even if you’ve never heard the song before.

It is kind of amazing how well “Weapon Of Choice” holds up as a track on its own without the video of Christopher Walken dancing along. But after “Praise You,” “Going Out Of My Head,” and sped-up remix of “Brimful of Asha” by Cornershop whiz by, the second half of the record fall off. I suppose part of the problem is that there was no radio format available to play these more recent singles, but they also don’t seem to resonate as “hits” though “Demons” and the new track included “That Old Pair Of Jeans” do show some growth into creating some real songs instead of just mindless head bobbing music (no matter how fun the head bobbing is).

Its summer time. This is your opportunity to get in the car with the sunroof down and holla “Right about now, Funk Soul Brother!” at others. And don’t feel guilty if you want to listen to the same track more than once.

CKY the comic

ckycomic.jpgCKY as a band have been plagued with bad reviews throughout their career, but that never stopped the fans from supporting them.
However, CKY has never been plagued by Zombies, so who knows where the breaking point is.
Unkown comics is preparing a CKY comic for August with a $3.99 cover price. While the band is now the more well known side of CKY, I wonder if stars of the CKY videos (Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, Brandom Dicamillo, etc) will make appearances in the book.
