Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron VGA Trailer

Spike TV’s Video Game Awards are running live right now, but if you missed the show (probably better off if you did), the next chapter of Transformers had its theatrical premiere.

Fall of Cybertron continues the fight from 2010’s War For Cybertron and adds several favorite characters to the mix. See some Decepticons combine and then a Dinobot challenge them!

The name of the song included in the video is “The Humbling River” by the band Puscifer.

Maximum Letdown: Soldier of Fortune Payback (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

So I must confess, the only reason I picked up this game was because Best Buy had it on sale for $10 and it came with a free copy of the original Soldier of Fortune. The original SOF was ‘edgy’ because you could blow enemies apart using the right weapons. The series took a hit with the lackluster Double Helix. With the release of a new Rambo flick and the controversy over Blackwater, Activision figured it was the perfect time to capitalize on FPS games about hardcore mercenaries and warzones. This time however, instead of series regular Raven doing the development, Activision handed production duties to studio Cauldron HQ, makers of classics such as Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2011, Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2010, Jurassic: The Hunted and not one, but TWO first person shooters based on the civil war! With no less than the makers of crappy budget Wii titles and generic Civil War FPS games, then no doubt SOF would be on its way to becoming the biggest FPS franchise ever right? Well, lets see…

Spider-man: Edge of Time announced

A new Spider-man game has been announced from Activision and developer Beenox called Edge of Time. This will feature both Spider-man and Spider-man 2099. The game centers around the death of Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-man and how Spider-man 2099, Miguel O’Hara’s very own dark and catastrophic future is a direct result of Parker’s death. Gameplay will center on Miguel traveling back in time to cause change and moving forward in time to determine the effect. Its a neat concept that has led to many great stories in fiction, but could easily get very convoluted. Fortunately, the game is in good hands with Peter David writing the story. David is not only a comic book writing veteran, but he was also the long time scribe on the Spider-man 2099 series.

Attendees at WonderCon, this weekend, will apparently get the first look at the new game.

Consider me excited for more Spider-man 2099!

Goodbye, Bizarre Creations

On February 18, Bizarre Creations officially closed its doors. Activison purchased the studio in 2007, and after 2 underperforming games (Blur and James Bond: Bloodstone), they decided to shut the group down. Previously, Bizarre had a stellar track record, including the Project Gotham Racing series for Microsoft Xbox and Xbox 360.
Bizarre can also be credited with creating the success of Xbox Live Arcade and downloadable console games in general. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved was an early hit, and at only $5 sold very well and helped pave the way for the hundreds of score attack and arcade style games that now populate the service.
There is little doubt that without Bizarre the Xbox platform would not be what it is today. Not even close. It is a shame that their move to Activision and producing for the PS3 as well resulted in closure so quickly.

X-Men: Destiny trailer teases, does little else

First announced at New York Comic Con in October, not much has been talked about X-Men: Destiny because of all the other higher profile Marvel games to come out recently and more on the way (Marvel vs Capcom 3, Spider-man: Shattered Dimensions, The X-Men Arcade Game, etc). The story for the game will be written by one-time X-Men scribe Mike Carey. Beyond that really isn’t clear. The teaser is really just that. A tease. It looks like there will be many playable characters, but its not apparent in what capacity. We’ll find out more as Fall 2011 approaches ever closer!

Transformers: War For Cybertron – 10x XP extended holiday weekend

It looks like Transformers: War for Cybertron is getting a little more life with another 10x XP extended holiday weekend. The game’s official Facebook page updated with the following:

“We kick off another 10x XP blast starting…now! We will keep the XP rewards up to 10x their normal value all the way through this week and into this weekend, ending on Sunday Nov 28th at midnight. Enjoy a leg of turkey while you level your transformers up even quicker this weekend.”

This is going on right now through Sunday evening.
A shame this does nothing for anyone having trouble with Escalation.

$20 Game of the Week: Call of Duty – Modern Warfare (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty franchise had successfully usurped Medal of Honor as the premier WWII FPS franchise. Unfortunately, it also took MOH’s place as the poster child for genre burnout. Thankfully, developer Infinity Ward realized this fact, and took the next COD game into a whole new era, or more specifically, the modern world. While players were initially worried that Modern Warfare will be exploitative of the War on Terror, they were happy to learn that the game took a different route. Instead of basing it on the current conflicts in the Middle East, Modern Warfare thrust players into an epic conflict that takes its cue from action movies as opposed to the evening news.
