Lost Classics/Maximum Letdown Wolverine Special

hughThis past week saw the legendary mutant superhero Wolverine return to movie theaters by way of the film X-men origins: Wolverine. Of course, the logical tie-in game hit store shelves as well. Word on the street is that this new game isn’t half bad. That’s a good thing too, as Wolverine’s solo history in video gaming has been less than encouraging. This special maximum letdown takes a look at one of his previous solo endeavors. As an added bonus, this week’s lost classic , included in this article, takes a look at one of his many team up adventures.

Maximum Letdown: Onechanbara – Bikini Samurai Squad (Xbox 360)

onechanbara*sigh*

Think about it, Asian women in bikinis killing scores of zombies.

This should have been an early contender for game of the year.

(Okay maybe not exactly, but it should at least have been a fun way to pass the time until Resident Evil 5 had been released)

So what happened?

I don’t know, but click after the jump and I’ll do my best to help find an answer.

When’s Your Judgment Day?

derekKyle Reese and the T-101 sent back to protect Edward Furlong had it at August 29th 1997. By the movie version of continuity Sarah Connor ultimately lived to see this day without an attack but as Kristina Lokenator and Arnie #3 showed up, Judgement Day would still take place on July 25th 2004. Then comes what’s had geeks real exited for the past 2 years, the event of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which ignores the 2004 Judgment Day, but also ignores the original 1997 date and once again pushes Judgment Day back to April 21st, 2011, which is only two years from today. Get that bomb shelter stocked with canned goods!

Terminator PosterIt’s a well thought out date, to be sure. With the events of the first episode taking place in September 2007, this gives the show more than enough time to come to a reasonable conclusion, be canceled, or again postpone Judgment Day by April 2011. This has already been suggested by a number of things. The April 2011 Skynet was Andy Good’s Turk. Andy’s out of the picture, and the Turk has taken a drastically different course. Derek is a stranger to Jesse who has lived a number of things differently than he has, and though she refuses to give him a date for when her Judgment Day is, it seems plainly obvious that it’s not the day Derek and Kyle remember as seen in the season 1 finale.

The Return of Ratbat

In honor of tax day for all Americans, I wanted to do an appropriate article for the occasion. So I thought to myself, “Self, what better way to celebrate tax day than with the return of the Decepticon Energon Auditor, Ratbat!” I mean really, what’s scarier than a Decepticon? How about a Decepticon Auditor!

Silent Hill Wii on the Horizon

silenthillcoverSo Nintendo Power has a big front-page splash for a new Silent Hill game that’s coming out for the Wii. GoNintendo elaborates;

“This is a reimagining of the first Silent Hill,” explains producer Tomm Hulett. “It’s not a remake or a port. That’s an important distinction. It really feels like a new game.”

Apparently the story is the same, concerning Harry Mason as the main protagonist and him searching for his daughter Cheryl after she gets lost in the surreal town of Silent Hill. However, certain things have changed. On top of challenging puzzles, you now can find ways to access every room presented to you, rather than some rooms being locked in one phase of Silent Hill and others being unlocked in another phase. No load times have been announced, the Wii control stick and remote are used for separate actions, such as walking and using the flashlight respectively. We’re also told there will be no combat in this new game, and that you can only run from your enemies.

Ok, no load times and more in-depth controls seem like a good deal to me. The issue concerning the locked doors is nice, but takes away a bit of what made the other Silent Hill games different, even if in a frustrating way. However having no combat whatsoever and only being able to flee? How does that make the game any better? “Survival” isn’t just about running away from the threat; it’s about keeping yourself safe from harm. Sometimes you can’t always run and need to defend yourself, even with a crappy knife or wrench you picked up. I hardly see how removing combat makes this game more “survival horror”, but that’s me. I’m sure we’ll hear more about it in the near future.

Maximum Letdown: Legend of Dragoon & RPG Game Development Algebra

legendofdragoonWelcome back to Maximum Letdown, Powet’s go-to guide on games that either had that one fatal flaw, didn’t quite live up to the hype, or just plain suck. Because today is St. Patty’s day, I’m gonna give you something extra: a math lesson. If you’re an RPG fan you’ll want to pay attention to this, as I’ll tell you the formula to making a good game (hint: the exact opposite of this). There is even some homework, so break out your pencils and notepads, because there will be a pop quiz on all of this.
