Stuff You Want for the week of 2011.05.02

Another somewhat slow week in the world or game releases, which I suppose is a good thing considering the PlayStation Network is still down indefinitely. Thor comes out in theaters next weekend, but the video game tie-in will be released this week.

More after the jump!

SDCC 2011: Mattel Exclusives Announced

Last night, G4’s Attack of the Show got the world exclusive reveal for all of Mattel’s SDCC 2011 exclusives. They were so gracious about the exclusive reveal that they only showed a few of the many items actually filmed while ignoring some of the high profile exclusives including the MOTU Classics item.

$20 Game of the Week: The Ball (PC)

This Past week, Portal 2 hit stores everywhere. If you don’t have enough money for it, don’t worry, there is another first person shooter/puzzle hybrid you can check out in the meantime. The Ball, developed by Swedish developers Teotl Studios, was originally intended to be a mod to Unreal Tournament 3. Instead, the developers moved it over to the Unreal Development Kit in order to release the game as a standalone package. You play as an archeologist trapped in a cave. You encounter two artifacts: a large round ball and a strange gun which you use to control it. You use the ball to solve puzzles, defeat enemies, and explore the secrets of the underground cavern. The game’s physics makes the puzzles unique, and the Unreal Engine 3-powered graphics make the game look gorgeous. It was entered into Epic’s Make Something Unreal annual contest, and was also included in Valve’s Potato Sack Pack, a Steam promotion featuring several independently developed games that were discounted and bundled in anticipation of Portal 2’s release. So if you’re done with Portal 2, or just don’t have the money for it yet, pick this up in the meantime.

Street Fighter X Tekken Captivate 2011 Trailers and Screens!

The game was announced a year ago, and isn’t due until 2012, but even with only a handful of characters shown, Street Fighter X Tekken is looking well. Capcom has released 2 new trailers, one consisting of cinematics and another of gameplay, as well as a poster and 10 screen shots.

The SF character retain their look from Street Fighter 4, and the Tekken characters seem to be making the transition to Capcom’s gameplay and art style very well.

However, Tekken sukz and Street Fighter Rulz lol, so this game can finally put and end to that argument.

Powet Alphabet: N is for Nick Fury

Since the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

In a universe full of Super Soldiers, gods, mutants, monsters, robots, and just about everything else you can imagine, there is one organization that we can rely upon to keep tabs on all the madness and keep everything, and everyone, in line. That’s the Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Division, more commonly known as S.H.I.E.L.D. And for the longest time, one man has been at the center of it all: Nicholas Fury. Nick has been many things during his lifetime: an amateur boxer, a WWII hero, a CIA agent, and a super spy. His most notable job was the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. While he may not shoot beams out of his eyes, have adamantium claws, wear a suit of armor, or have the proportionate strength of a spider, he is just as vital, if not more vital to the Marvel Universe, as any of its greatest meta-human champions.

Five Reasons Sucker Punch Is Better Than Avatar

Over the last 2 years, I’ve been dogged by the fact that I though Avatar was an overrated turd, and now I’ve got the ideal underrated gem to compare it to. Both rely heavily on their visual effects to tell a story and I’ll spell out five reasons why I think Sucker Punch is better than Avatar.
