Powet Alphabet: M is for Metropolis

Metropolis. Most readers have probably heard of this movie at one point or another. I would bet few have ever actually seen it, though.

It has many achievements to its name; one of the highest number of extras of any movie, the most expensive silent film ever made, but most importantly for the science fiction genre, the first movie to ever feature a female android, or gynoid. This is one of the many reasons that M is for Metropolis.

Read on to learn more about the movie and why we care about it.

Lost Classics: Firestriker (SNES)

firestrikerThis odd Super Nintendo game can pretty much be described as Araknoid meets Zelda. Although it doesn’t look too much graphically, it has a unique style of gameplay that you just don’t see in action games. Playing as a firestriker known as Slader, you make use of the Traillight (which is basically a fancy ball) to stop an evil archmage. Along the way, you’ll battle monsters and rescue any comrades you meet along the way. You’ll be accompanied by a mage which acts as a goalie. You can play co-op mode with another player, or battle up to three of your friends in competitive multiplayer modes. Hopefully it won’t be much longer until someone brings this game to virtual console. Better yet, why not a 3D remake using the Wii remote?

$20 Game of the Week: The Witcher Enhanced Edition (PC)

The_Witcher_Enhanced_EditionThe Witcher is based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s collection of short stories. When the original version of the Witcher was released in 2007, it showed a lot of promise. However, a number of in-game issues bought it down. This enhanced edition of the game, released in 2008, fixes most of these issues, and includes new content. For people who already own the original version of the game, these enhancements are available as a free download on the website. For those who haven’t played the original version of the game, this is the perfect package, and it’s an amped-up version of one of the best PC role playing games in recent years. In the game, players take the role of Geralt of Rivia. Geralt is a Witcher, who is a traveling monster hunter for hire. Geralt is one of the few remaining witchers left in the world, and he is stricken with amnesia. When a group of assassins attacks the witcher strong hold, Geralt travels throughout the world to find out why, get revenge, and hopefully find out the truth behind his amnesia.

Locke And Ben Together Again: O’Quinn and Emerson heading to NBC with JJ Abrams for new show

johnlockebenlinus
Actors Terry O’Quinn and Micheal Emerson were two of the most enjoyable on a cast full of great characters actors on LOST. As the man of faith John Locke and the man of mystery and double cross Benjamin Linus respectively, they stole any scene they weren’t already the focus of.

Before the show ended, O’Quinn mentioned in interviews he and Emerson were playing with ideas for a new series, mentioning they’d play bounty hunters or secret agents. It looks like LOST executive producer JJ Abrams heard the call, and his Bad Robot production company now has an order for their show.

Rumors began circulating on Monday that the tentatively titled “Odd Jobs” would be a comedic drama where Emerson and O’Quinn would play former black ops secret agents living in suburbia. It was pitched to networks and now has a pilot order for NBC. The show could get into production as early as next year. Alias writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec will helm the series, JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk will serve as executive producers.

The hardest part about all series trying to replicate LOST’s success (V, The Event, Flash Forward, etc) has been that none have the stregnth of actors and characters to keep the show moving even in dull moments. With two of LOST’s funniest and most interesting character actors on board (both had Emmy nominations this year), “Odd Jobs” may end up being a success even if it lacks a sci fi fantasy twist.

DC Entertainment closing Wildstorm and Zuda; laying off 20% of staff

In a series of announcement, more and more details have emerged about the most recent bout of changes at DC Entertainment. The first bit of news was that DC Entertainment is becoming a ‘bi-coastal’ company. This is not a huge surprise and has been long rumored. DC Publishing will remain in New York, while the digital and multi-media services will move to Los Angeles. (First Press release after jump) This latter move will most likely help leverage the close proximity of the Warner Bros. Entertainment unit.

The next bit of news came out that DC Entertainment would be closing the doors at both Wildstorm studios (founded by DC Co-Publisher Jim Lee and eventually bought by DC) and Zuda comics (DC’s first foray into the digital comics arena with original art and stories from undiscovered talent). There was a letter from the Co-Publishers about this move (available to read after the jump as the second press release). In the letter it is made to sound that Zuda and Wildstorm will end, but all characters and books will eventually be put under the DC banner and imprint. Wildstorm books will end, but the characters would likely either be integrated to the DC Universe over time. Zuda books will continue under the DC name. That was my interpretation, at least. Again, for the details, read the second press release after the jump.

As more news came out though, it was revealed that 50 of the 250 employees at DC Entertainment are going to be laid off.

“We seriously considered every scenario and looked at the operational, financial and people considerations,” Nelson said. “We think this is the best way to go.”

This was apparently the final move in the restructuring shake-up that started with Diane Nelson’s appointment to head DC Entertainment a year ago. Now that the organizational changes have been set in motion, the next priority for the team in charge is to focus on content. Once the Harry Potter franchise ends at the box office, Warner Bros. will be leaning heavily on DC intellectual properties as new content to push starting with Green Lantern.
