Red Faction Origins Trailer

Editor’s note: I did not choose the thumbnail for the embedded video.

THQ’s Red Faction is being made into a SyFy Channel movie that may become an original series. We first heard about this a year ago, but its finally going to air in June 4.

This definitely looks like a Syfy original, which might not be a bad thing. Hopefully this movie and the next Red Faction title both live up to the seriously awesome and fun Red Faction Guerilla that came out in 2009.

Press release with cast details after the jump. [Read the rest of this entry…]

Stuff You Want for the week of 2011.05.02

Another somewhat slow week in the world or game releases, which I suppose is a good thing considering the PlayStation Network is still down indefinitely. Thor comes out in theaters next weekend, but the video game tie-in will be released this week.

More after the jump!

Stuff You Want for the week of 2011.03.28

Seems like a lot of sports games this week. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12, NASCAR The Game 2011, Shift 2 and WWE All-Stars. WWE All-Stars is probably the game with the most hype, allowing you to play as wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Randy Savage, Andre The Giant, The Ultimate Warrior, The Rock, Rey Mysterio, etc.,. An all star cast of all star wrestlers.

$20 Game of the Week: Alan Wake (Xbox 360)

The last time that the name Remedy was attached to a game, Max Payne and Mona Sax were blowing away mobsters back in 2003’s Max Payne 2. Since then, the Finnish developers have been working on this Xbox 360 exclusive. It was one of the first titles announced for the system, and then info on it became scarce, almost to the point where one would think it was canceled. Thankfully that wasn’t the case, and Alan Wake finally hit shelves last year. Although it didn’t sell anywhere near what it deserved to, it provides gamers with a unique and memorable experience. You play as the title character, Alan Wake. A struggling writer from New York, you and your wife travel to Bright Falls, a town in the Pacific Northwest hoping to get away from it all. However, things go awry rather quickly. You wife goes missing, you keep finding pages of a manuscript you’ve written, although you don’t remember writing it, and worst of all, you’re constantly attacked by a darkness which has taken over everyone and everything in your way.

Toy Fair 2011: Bandai press release for upcoming Thundercats products

We have some more news about the upcoming Thundercats product lines coming from Bandai. Among the pictures included with the release are photos of Panthro and Tigra figures from the new show. We haven’t seen those before now. Just Lion-O and Cheetara. We also get our first look at some of the Thundercats Classics line. Not too bad. Hoping we get a classic Thunder Tank for that line as well. The new one is just missing that influence of the original design’s simplicity. Note that you can see Snarf’s head poking up from the cockpit. Also, Panthro’s head on the 4 inch figures looks pretty terrible, but these probably aren’t the final product anyway.

Press release after the jump, along with many more pictures!

Lost Classics: Total Annihilation (PC)

After Starcraft, Total Annihilation is perhaps one of the greatest old-school RTS games ever. Although there isn’t much of a plot (something about two armies fighting over weather or not to transfer human consciousness to machines), the strategy options that the game gave players were unprecedented compared to other RTS games around that time. The game is considered a spiritual predecessor to Gas Powered Game’s Supreme Commander (lead designer Chris Taylor developed both games). There is no resource gathering, as the two resources you need (metal and energy) stream into your reserves at a fixed rate, and battles can consist of over 1000 units on the field, which was unheard of at it’s time. The game also featured a rudimentary physics system for explosions, projectiles, and wreckage. Various patches and utilities have been constructed by both developer Cavedog and the fan community, adding new units, races, maps, and other features.

If you’re a fan of the genre, you owe it to yourself to check out this lost classic. The game, along with its two expansions Core Contingency and Battle Tactics are both available on GOG.com.
