Famicom Dojo Podcast: Neo Geo X

It costs more than a 3DS XL and just as much as a Wii, contains (at least a few) games available more cheaply on either the eShop or Wii Virtual Console, and comes with a dock that looks like the AES, but doesn’t actually play Neo Geo carts. And yet we still want one. Or two.

Sean and Vinnk wonder what the heck is wrong with them that they’d blow their hard-earned cash on such a frivolous item. Is it because it’s sexy and iPhone-like? Is it because of nostalgia? Is it because they’re stodgy old-timers who are fed up with a constant parade of uninspiring new games? …nah, but it’s fun to wonder!

Powetcast 131: Celebrities Impersonated

Zac, Adam, and Cap tear into a man who can’t draw feet, another Kingdom Hearts game, a too enthusiastic guy who hunts for toys, and the celebrity cartoons of the 80s and 90s.

This is all about legacy. Rob Liefeld’s legacy. Disney legacy. Hulk Hogan’s legacy.

There is homework in this episode. When you hear the assignment, please leave a comment. I’m not going to type what it is right here because that would be cheating (somehow). Also I honestly forogt what I said and its been now 2 days since we recorded the episode when I’m writing this post. So I’ll be interested to read the responses having forgotten the question. I hope I didn’t make this up in my head right now.

Powet Top 5: Top 5 Video Game Remakes

Welcome to the Powet Top 5, where we explore the top (and bottom) 5 items we think are relevant to any of a variety of topics that span the imagination. Sit back, read, and respond.

Screenshot from the forthcoming Rise of the Triad remake, rebuilt from the ground up using Unreal Engine 3.

It’s quite easy to remake something, be it a tv show, movie, or video game. Maybe that’s why there are so many of them. At worst, a remake can be nothing more than a simple cash grab aimed at nostalgic fans. At best however, it can bring back what fans loved about the original work while introducing it to a whole new generation of fans. It’s not hard to make a good remake either, especially in gaming. There are 4 simple steps to making one:

1. Preserve (and enhance when and where necessary) what worked the first time around
2. Fix (or get rid of) what didn’t work
3. Add in new features that enhance the original experience without diluting it
4. Give it a graphical makeover. It doesn’t have to use today’s cutting edge graphics (and in some cases, it probably shouldn’t, just so as long as it looks better than it did the first time.

Here are 5 of the best remakes in video games. They’ve gone above and beyond simply reskinning and re-releasing the original game, they’ve added to it, and in some cases changing it completely while preserving what players loved about it so many years ago. Check them out, and sound off below if there is a remake that you enjoyed or that you want to see.

Remember ALF? He’s back. In movie form.

ALF making a cat sandwich

If you’re a child of the 80s you surely remember ALF! This Alien Life Form was the star of a successful sitcom that no one cares about anymore. But hey, no one cared about Garfield or Alvin and the Chipmunks, but that didn’t stop them from turning into successful film franchises! That’s right, there’s an ALF movie in the works!

Hollywood Reporter tells us that Sony Pictures Animation has aquired the rights to the franchise and plans on making a live action and CG hybrid film. That’s right, no more puppet, he’ll just be bad CG this time around! Will Gordon Shumway still be from Melmac? Will he once again be shacking up with the Tanner family? Will he still try to eat cats? If he does, will Seth McFarlane be involved? Will he be going to the city like those stupid Smurfs? Is there any chance this movie won’t be horrible?

ALF Pogs

If you were a fan of ALF back in the day and hate yourself, why not pick up the DVDs which include episodes which are conveniently edited for syndication!
